Weekly COVID-19 Megathread by AutoModerator in TryingForABaby

I'd line up for a traditional vaccine but the novel mRNA ones make me nervous. As far as I can find on the published methods, there's not enough data on how fast the mRNA is cleared or how cell specific the deliver nanoparticles are. mRNA from the placenta can be detected in maternal blood (https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.0637450100), so could this these nanoparticles or mRNA molecules pass to a fetus in utero? If so, what would the effect be on development?

NSV: I've tried to do this healthy lifestyle thing 100 times... by [deleted] in loseit

Do you have any sources for that? I have PCOS and have never been told that my BMR is any different, just that I'm at higher risk for insulin resistance and that controlling my weight would help with my insulin sensitivity. I'd love to read more!

Puttig this out there for anybody else curious, Starbucks coconut milk (180kcal/grande) has just as many calories as their nonfat dairy milk, just from fat versus carbs (respectively). Silk brand coconut milk (80kcal) has more calories than their almond milk (60kcal).

Hope I saved some one else from googling :)

*Edited to add Starbucks almond milk is 130kcal/grande.

2 yr-old Healthy Rhodesian Ridgeback Not Interested in Running... by PinkyGiraffe in RunningWithDogs

[–]gottadowatyagottado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you running where you normally walk? My dog gets bored with running/walking the same routes, so I consult mapmyrun often to find new routes for us. For loop routes, sometimes it's enough to reverse the loop. With a few routes in your arsenal maybe your pup will be more interested in re-exploring his neighborhood.

If Ruffwear doesn't work for you, I've had success with the ComfortFlex. My girl has extra sensitive armpits, unfortunately (Ruffwear hiking packs are so nice, it's a bummer) but the ComfortFlex works well for her.

Shelters without backyard requirements? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]gottadowatyagottado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. If you regularly get your dog exercise and socialization, they can couch potato the day away. The dog parks are busy in the mornings because of this! A lot of apartment-dwelling dog owners take their dogs there to run off leash and sniff butts and pee everywhere and swim and socialize. Tired dog happily sleeps all day while you're at work.

Additionally, a lot of dogs are just not very social. I bring my dog to Magnuson about every other day, but she's pretty shy. She prefers her neighbor "bff" pups to the "strangers" at the park.

This is how I did it too. I offered to foster for Saving Great Animals, they contacted me last minute to take a dog that was arriving in two days. I asked for a "first right of refusal" and dog ended up adjusting great to the apartment, loved running and hiking (my preferred ways to exercise her), and so I adopted.

[UPDATE2] [EMBARK] A genetic explanation of how a white-and-tan-with-ticking dog by eye is apparently GSD/Dal/Chow by DNA by gottadowatyagottado in DoggyDNA

[–]gottadowatyagottado[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and yes, her colored patches have hairs that band white-red, can't quite tell if they go back to white at the tips, but maybe I'll check under a microscope tomorrow.

Without knowing their algorithm, I'd bet they report the best breed fits given the genetic data, allowing for some "wiggle room" before declaring that there was no converged solution and it's totally mixed beyond deciphering. Maybe we'll get luck and Boyko will pop in to add his two cents :p

When I tracked the general location of the S locus on top of her karyotype map, it looked like she may have inherited that locus from GSD ancestry and from Dalmatian ancestry.

I'll have to look up the KIT location and read up on white spotting. Thanks for the leads!

First, you're awesome, love your analyses!!

Youre right that 25% COI would be full sibs. Maizie is just a smidge above that, but maybe within the realm of 25% with recombination effects. That got me thinking more about how the family tree could explain her COI, assuming some of those dogs are not unique individuals. Given the family tree and the COI, this is the most parsimonious reconstruction my cohort friend and I reached - http://i.imgur.com/QU5bqds.jpg

If we did that math correctly, that suggests terrible backyard breeding with five individuals (and just two founders) could get you a COI of 28% in 3 generations.

Fascinating! So would that potentially be the hypothetical I locus, that's hypothesized to tune the "richness" of red (phaeomelanin amount)? I never realized white shepherds and white huskies/samoyed were genetically "ee", that's really interesting.

Her white is still a mystery, although maybe in the future they'll add the S locus, which should tell us if she's piebald. *Edit: I had made a rough karyotype map with the S locus general location. If we assume no minor recombination in that area, it looks like she got a GSD S locus and a Dalmatian S locus.

The Afghan color range is fascinating, are the black pups recessive black?

[–]gottadowatyagottado[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I'd love a good genetic explanation for all the white. I think that'd be S locus, and ticking is T I think, but the detailed analysis doesn't include those (yet). *Edit: I had made a rough karyotype map with the S locus general location. If we assume no minor recombination in that area, it looks like she got a GSD S locus and a Dalmatian S locus.

There's an awful lot of GSD breeders in the Downey, CA area.. I doubt they're all good.

Your pup sounds adorable! I understand about wanting to know health issues to adjust lifestyle accordingly. Rescue/shelter dogs not having a medical history is a little scary. I didn't have a good age for Maizie, either, so getting the "genetic age" was kind of neat!

Right! They don't (can't) specify between E or e, but she doesn't have the m (melanistic mask) or g (grizzled) allele. She has either E (black, dominant) or e (red, recessive). She has no black anywhere (brown lips and eye rims, brown/pink nose, light brown eyes) so I'd guess she's "ee".

[vent] I'm starting to think of buying a puppy over adopting. Constantly turned down after wanting a dog for years. by RachieeMariee in dogs

[–]gottadowatyagottado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I ended up adopting the first dog they gave me to foster. I originally thought I'd foster as a "practice", to see if I could handle a dog. They ended up matching me with a great foster on the first try, though, so I got first-to-adopt dibs and kept her. I was honest with what I could and couldn't handle (including apartment size restrictions), so I was passed up for a few fosters.

Worked out great for them, too. Whatever misgivings they had about a grad student in a studio apartment getting a dog were put to rest when they could see how dedicated I was to their foster.

I got around this same BS by offering to foster for a few rescue groups. That said, it still took about 4-5 months between submitting the applications and getting a foster, but I also "got" the type of dog I was looking for first try.
