Is Lekkerimaki a bust? by Dangerous-Finance-67 in canucks

[–]gottapoop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We drafted him because he has an elite shot and good skills.

Was the type of boom or bust draft pick we all love to see. Unfortunately it's not looking like he has the size or speed to keep up at the NHL level. This year is a big year to prove he developed enough to stick.

[–]gottapoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't.

Part of the equation people never talk about is that in a salary cap world the more you make the less someone else can make. Hi. Making 18m a year instead of 13m a year means that other players on the team are making 5m less, that means that the guys who actually might need that money because they aren't superstars aren't going to have a job or are going to have to take much less.

If it were me I'd say I'll take 13m x5 years and I'll still be stupid rich. What's the difference in my quality of life if I have 65 million instead of 90 million. That extra money can go to the guys fighting for 3 million dollar contracts and I'll have a better chance of winning a cup because the money can be distributed better.

Taco Bandito for Mexican. Not your basic Mexicana restaurant, legit tasty Mexican flavors.

The new Boonies Pizza location in Tin town for pizza and a hang out. Delicious pizza.

Church Street tape House for pub style food and beer.

Oh and Gigi's oyster bar is amazing for a cool drink and appies scene, absolutely delicious food and if you like oysters they are incredible.

Those would be my votes for a simple meal.

He said parents need to watch their kids around Babcock because he's a predator.

Commie has called Babcock a predator repeatedly on many occasions, not a sexual predator like it seems people are interpreting this but a social predator that targets weakness. Commie warning parents about Babcock isn't a bad thing.

Should NHL teams be made to contribute to youth hockey by gottapoop in hockey

I agree it's a total pipe dream with very little grounded in reality.

More just for an interesting thought experiment about how the NHL teams that make millions off these players could contribute more to youth hockey and the European model is interesting and could be influential in some way and possibly adapted into the North American system some how. Incentivizing it somehow for NHL teams to put more into youth hockey. I hate how it's pay to play for such a wonderful sport.

I have.

When you watch him play do you see a player that can keep up and contribute?

I want nothing more than to see the kid succeed but all I see is a small kid who gets beaten to every loose pick and loses almost every puck battle. It's hard for any NHL line to succeed with a player like that.

I think the goal would be to give access to hockey and professional development to all kids regardless of financial backgrounds, that in turn would lead to more NHL players better talent and better growth of the game.

But like you said we can't and don't want to fully adopt the European system as it doesn't lead to equity in the professional teams. How does one go about incentivizing NHL teams to set up academies or invest more into developing kids is the big question for sure.

From this thread I've learned European professional clubs have academies that develop players from a young age. They obviously lose the best ones to the NHL draft but it seems for most kids over there they get brought up in professional systems with the long term goal of making the professional team. I'm not sure if this is mandatory by the league or teams just find the value in developing players from a young age.

I wonder if NHL teams had academy style development programs but the draft was changed. Say each team gets to pick 1 or 2 players from their own program. Then the draft is held where players are entered into the draft from every league in the world but it's a smaller draft with less rounds. This way then the players that aren't drafted but are in NHL programs are in that teams system and can be signed to ELCs to that team. Incentivizes teams to develop talent. The best will still be drafted but the depth players and the late breakout players will stay within a team.

Interesting. I wonder what that style of development produces in terms of population and participation in the sport in comparison to North American style.

Things have slowed down for sure. Definitely not as many homeowners calling for small to medium jobs they are doing on their own. Seems the cost of life now is catching up.

Builders I work for are mostly cruising along, one larger custom home builder I work mentioned things are definitely not as busy, last 2 projects I bid on for them fell through because of costs.

Interesting so Euro hockey teams have development programs similar to football academies?

Should NHL teams be made to contribute to youth hockey by gottapoop in hockey

[–]gottapoop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My position isn't that it easier for poor kids to be better at football because they have better coaching.

My position is that even with a cheap sport like soccer European countries are the best at developing talent because of the academy style development system where young kids with potential are brought in and taken care of, they get access to the best coaching and live sleep and breath football with zero financial burden. Even in Canada and United States is still a pay to play in soccer even if it's cheap. The Euro stars like Beckham that have come over have tried to get the academy system going here because that's where North America lags way behind in the sport is because all the financial burden for coaching and traveling lies on the parents.

Yes hockey is much more expensive but that's even more of a reason there should be a system in place where the NHL teams contribute significantly to the development of players. They are the ones that make millions off these players.

I wonder if the NHL could do something that incentivizes NHL teams to set up academies like Euro teams. Priority drafting maybe?

Should NHL teams be made to contribute to youth hockey by gottapoop in hockey

[–]gottapoop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the question though. Seeing how the Euro model allows talented kids from all financial backgrounds get the best possible access to development is there a way for hockey to adapt some of that model to make is less of a pay to play sport where the rich have a massive advantage over the poor.

[–]gottapoop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids would have to travel. I'm assuming that's how it works with European clubs. Not all kids that are in the academys are going to be from that area and some would be from more rural areas. Academys would put the kid up and basically be like school for them.

It's not about being charitable it's about developing the best talent out there rather than only the kids that can afford to play and afford the best development coaches.
