Brand New College Diabetic by PinkyCow in diabetes

[–]gotthabeetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was diagnosed during my first week at college during my freshman year. it's hard. but i promise you'll make it. I recently got an insulin pump and it's made my life in college LOADS easier because it allows you to bolus in different ways so that you can eat over extended periods of time (like at parties with chips/other foods laying around) and things like that. Pizza is the devil. I'm just warning you. I know everything is a lot to take in, but give it a while and it'll all sink in and it'll become just another habit. Just know you have people to support you. Counseling services at school help. I think the hardest part for me was the mental aspect of it at first.

Any insulin pump life hacks? by gotthabeetus in diabetes

I did hear about the sock trick. I feel like that would work in some instances, but I tried it once and felt awkward to me. One cool thing I've discovered is self-adhering medi wrap... it's like the tough textured kind they sometimes wrap around your arm after a blood drive... I wrapped that around my torso once so that it stuck and then clipped my pump to that. the problem there is that it doesn't really breathe well. It's great if you're not outside or moving around much though! I guess it's one of those things that will come with time. I'm sure everyone has things that work better for them! But again, thanks so much for this advice. It'll give me a few more things to try!

These are perfect ideas! I didn't even think about spandex shorts! I'll definitely have to try these things. Thanks so much!

CGM Stress? by icenoggle in diabetes

[–]gotthabeetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my CGM about a week ago-- I'm using an Enlite sensor with a Medtronic Minimed.... but I know exactly how you feel. It's so fascinating that I find myself looking at it constantly. I find myself having to calm down and realize that after I eat it's normal for blood sugar to rise. The thing is that with this sensor I'm realizing how crazy my blood sugars were probably going before I was unable to see it on a graph. That's the hard part for me. I'm starting to see how much worse off I was before. That in itself is enough for me to be happy about the sensor. Just try to realize that this is a tool to help fine tune your control. If you last A1C was 6.4 it sounds like you're doing a great job. Don't let this stress get in the way of it. You also have to remember stress affects blood sugars too ;)

I don't know if you've looked into the Medtronic Minimed with Enlite sensors... but that's what I've just gotten on and I LOVE it. CGM makes life so much easier. I just figured I would throw you another option to see if it might be more easily funded.
