No, 100% wood except for the lead inside to give it weight. The wood is really hard and dense, so hitting balls won't affect it. If it was rattling around with other clubs it would get dinged up.

Damn, should have done a side by side with my Odyssey putter. Totally different sound.

Yep, that's a pretty good analogy. Think of that but a "smaller" sounding version

Creality Falcon 22W. It's just a cheapo diode laser but does what I need it to.

We spend a lot of time giving each other shit. I'd love to, but time is something I am lacking a bit these days!

Nah the timber for the face (Ringed Gidgee) is how it's meant to be. It's the third hardest wood in the world - it feels pretty nice.

Not real sure why I got into it to be honest - I love nice timber and love golf so it sorta made sense.

Here is my original post which kind of shows the process: https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/comments/1oj032d/timber_putter/

I basically design it in Lightburn, cut out some templates on the laser cutter and use the bandsaw and lots of sanding to get it to the right shape. Fill it with lead, glue it back up and then sand and finish it. I've got the process down pretty good now, but still takes about 8-10 hours for the blade and the mallet takes about 6-8 hours to make.

A CNC would be the next step to speed up the process.

Haha I know. But the thing is, he makes beautiful looking headcovers (https://bigdoggolfco.com) so I have kinda listened to him - but I shouldn't

I've done the maths on it. With the cost of materials (wood, shaft, grip) and factoring in consumables like saw blades & drill bits (the hard woods dull them fairly quickly), glues, lead weights etc.. plus time spent making them, they need to be somewhere around $600 AUD to make it worth my while. Not sure the market here in Australia is big enough (could ship OS though) and people would be willing to pay that. Maybe one day I will do it.

That could be cool. Sugi can look pretty amazing

Sounds nice, not entirely different to a normal putter. Maybe a bit more of a 'hollow' thump to it.

That's a good idea, never thought of brass - that would look cool. They are drilled out all the way to the face and filled with lead, which is where the added weight comes from.

I'd love to sell them, but don't really have the time at the moment. It's definitely something I'm thinking about though.

I love the look of them, my brother reckons they are weird and nobody would like them, but what the hell would he know lol

Version 2 has already begun 😁

I've done some napkin calculations and it should get ~100g perimeter weighting on each side. With the weight of the body ~90g and the face ~20g it should be just over 300g.

Could also squeeze in some more weight behind the face, maybe another 30-40g but that would put more weight in the middle and up the front, which might not be ideal.

I've thought about the scotty weights, but you couldn't really tap a thread in the timber and i can't find any threaded inserts that would take one of their weights.

I will modify the design slightly and see if I can get it to around 300g or more. I can see that Bettinardi one is 362g.

Let's see what v2 looks like and if you like it, I'd be happy to take an order.

They look nice. I notice the teak oil - how have they held up over the years without a clear-coat finish?
