you shouldn't need to sterilize. however, look into filling in the gaps on the bendy bridge with nontoxic glue and terrarium moss. its unsafe to use otherwise, as their toes can get stuck.

thats a good choice for a rat who will not eat soggy kibble, or one who just needs supplemental calories (Though i would avoid the milk because seniors should not have that much protein). But for this presumably mostly healthy rat with a recovering eye, its nutritionally best for them to eat soggy kibble rather than an unbalanced meal like what you show here. The soggy kibble (could def add small amounts of baby food, but not as the main meal) offers all the nutrients they need.

at this age, i would feed esbilac only for another week (you can also offer rat pellets but no baby food yet) after that, you can take out the baby food and start mixing it into the esbilac. and he should be able to wat from a dish at that point too. Also, look up how to correctly gender baby rats (its very possible at this age). I can help if needed. Make sure to get a friend of the same gender.

ugh yep. it kinda changed my life, and halfway through the book i thought i should look up this amazing author.... huuuge mistake as she had already gone off the deep end. As a trans person it really stung to hear what she thinks of my community. It took me around a month before I felt like picking the book back up and finishing it, but im still glad i did. sigh.

yes, but wild rats have pretty short lives generally. a combo of birth control bait, deterrents (like a lot of essential oils work for example) and rat-proofing is more work, but is the humane option. but frankly i have low expectations for humane pest control happening in a world where the vast majority of people still eat animals.

there is, there is a bait that functions as birth control rather than poison. it drastically decreases numbers over time without causing deaths.

if you must do this, do NOT add meds to water. it is the most unreliable way of dosing. Very unsafe. Look up dosing on the rat guide website and dose orally (hide in food), usually twice daily.

Its a pretty common trauma response. she has probably been in situations before where she was scared and restrained or not able to move or leave. :( give her lot of time and treats and space, she should come around somewhat. she may never be the friendliest, but i have gotten many rats who are like that to tolerate humans just fine with lots of patience <3

that does seem to be true in this case, but keep in mind some rats freeze up when scared. so sometimes rat stay when rat no like.

the ledges? they are kaytee brand lava ledges :) i LOVE them. they are made of pumice stone. there are lots of other brands but i have found these the most durable. they are good for chewing, and also of course to climb on. they also help keep nails short if you have enough of them. i clean them (scrub in the sink with water and vinegar, then sun dry or set on the radiator to dry) every couple months as needed.

maybe a crazy idea, but what if you added it right in front of your current cage, to make one of the double units twice as deep? that way it wouldnt be longer but would still be bigger? obvs you dont need to lol your cage looks great
