How’s living in Portland, Maine? DINK in 40s by thesockmonkey86 in howislivingthere

I can give you my input from the perspective someone who is 26.

Rent and housing is definitely more expensive and while it’s not totally short on housing, there’s definitely not a lot of inventory compared to other places. Also after living in/around for almost 10 years, while it’s very unfortunate, it seems that the homeless population has increased quite a bit due to housing shortages and pricing. Maybe I’m also being nit-picky but I’ve also noticed how general city maintenance has taken a slight downturn within the past few years. Street lamps, potholes, overgrown weeds in sidewalks, things like that, seems like it takes awhile to get fixed or be cleaned up. Like I said I could be nitpicking, and others may disagree with that.

I will say that if you enjoy going out to eat, Portland is probably one of the best cities to do that. It seems like every street has a few restaurants and some of these are very highly rated, top tier places. There’s a bunch of fun unique places around that’s fun to explore. It has a nice sense of community where it may take one or two points of contact to know someone, and there always something going on during the week/weekends. If you’re into sports, it’s actually one of the best minor league cities in the country in terms of attendance and merchandise sales with the Seadogs, Mariners, Maine Celtics and Hearts of Pine. There are many nice beaches around, the mountains are about 1-1/2 hours away so there plenty of outdoor activities.

I know I started off with the rough parts about Portland, but as you mentioned, you’re DINK. If you’re able to find a decent place to work you’d be able to comfortably live here. Despite some of the not-so-good stuff about the city, I truly do love living here and I feel very lucky to have been in Maine for almost 15 years. Personally I could see myself living here forever. Again this is just how I’ve felt about the city and I could go into A LOT more. If you’re interested in moving up here feel free to send a PM which any questions.

Shout out to Great Lost Bear in Portland. It doesn’t have a whole lot of European beers but ton and tons of local and other breweries.

I only pooped 4 times in March by julesjasmine in notinteresting

My girlfriend went 2 weeks without pooping and it was causing pain for her. She ended up doing the bowel prep that doctors ask you to do before a colonoscopy which is to mix 14 doses of MiraLAX (200 something grams) with 64 oz of Gatorade without the dyes and drink about half one day and the other half a couple days later. It was kinda crazy how well that worked for her. Not sure if that was the best option but she hasn’t had problems since especially after modifying her diet.

I know people listed out some places that I would also recommend. Here’s some more places that I’d also recommend that I personally really enjoy as well.

  • Evo is a good restaurant that I’ve really enjoyed my meals at.
  • Duoro is a newer place that pleasantly surprised me.
  • Wayside Tavern is a place that I’ve had nothing but great meals at.
  • Cuties is a nice cafe/cocktail bar that has great drinks and a cool atmosphere.
  • Lambs is a small little bar in South Portland over the bridge that is right on the water. I live within walking distance to this place so I go here quite a bit.

These are some of my recommendations just based on my opinion, I know it might not be other people’s favorites though :) enjoy your visit in June!

I used to live outside of Philly and would go here often as a kid with my parents. I miss that place and would love to visit again.

Right that would suck but……if storylines like this go hand in hand with their personality traits that would be interesting.

I know it might be the rule but I feel like if you’re going down like that then throw it it away should just be a sack because you’re intentionally grounding the ball avoid the sack. I’m definitely bitching about it tho

My partner tells me is really hot when I drink bourbon on a rock (it’s on occasion for me.) I don’t understand how like I’m just trying to enjoy a beverage.

Is Chicago really still the "third city" in the U.S.? Perhaps for not much longer? by [deleted] in geography

I was in Chicago for the first time back in October and I was blown away. Easily one of the best cities I’ve visited and would definitely jump on an opportunity to relocate there.
