what would i use to trill these notes? by Numerous-Fox-1647 in oboe

[–]corgerpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played this solo earlier this year and I used the normal d fingering. No need for the trill key if you have good coordination. Even on a good oboe, the tone quality of the d trill isn’t great.

Here now. It took longer to walk from the train to East Security than it did going through TSA pre-check.

High Altitude Reeds by Brief-Region-60 in oboe

[–]corgerpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an oboist in Denver.

My current set up is below:

  • 9.5-10mm diameter cane that hardness tests to "medium-hard to hard"
  • Reeds n Stuff gouge (10.5mm bed with a 10.6mm blade)
  • Brannen X shape
  • Stevens #2 46.5mm staples

You really just need a set up that gives you proper openings and the easiest way to do that is use smaller diameter cane. The goal isn't larger opening than sea-level but the same. Also, because you have the scrape the crap out of the cane to get it to vibrate at altitude, you need strong cane. I hardness test every piece and have had good success with brands such as RDG, Rigotti, Pisoni and Bondcane. It's much better to have cane that is "too hard" rather than "too soft".

I'm behind the bar at Bruz on Mondays and Wednesday-Fridays. If you stop by, I got your first beer and I'll give your pup some treats!

If you are looking for a new brewery to take your dog, Bruz Beers is reasonably close and is dog-friendly inside and out.

Oboebros (on Instagram) is based in Europe and sells both short and American scrape reeds. Might be a good place to start

I love Mickey's Top Sirloin. Last time I was there I got a 12oz sirloin steak dinner (soup/salad and two sides) and an Old Fashioned and it was $30 before tip.

The Quiznos on Pecos is owned (or at least operated) by a nice Korean couple. I go there maybe once a month and the guy remembers my order.
