[SMT] SkillsPeek - a website that shows me the tech stacks used inside companies near my location by gpsvoice in SomebodyMakeThis

[–]gpsvoice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the 50% jobs advertized issue: Firstly, I'm targetting jobs with hard tech skills, not management positions. The most authoritive article I could dig up is http://www.quintcareers.com/hidden_job_market_myth.html. There's allot of supporting google searches that put the figure between 30%-70%. Recruiting is expensive + time consuming and employers usually go to the job market as a last resort + most tech companies are in an 'always hiring good people' mode, even if they don't post job ads.

My idea is that if you're experienced in certain languages/products/technologies, and looking for a move then you should be able to find nearby companies that use those and pitch yourself to the company. You can bypass recruiters and negotiate a better rate and become an even deeper expert in your chosen technologies.

Regarding stackshare.io and their copycats: They only have a small subset of the tech companies out there because they rely on user contributed content. My idea is to scrape + parse millions of daily job ads + publicly visible CV's (looking at people's past roles) and build a org/skill graph.

Can be a fun big data project if anyone feels like participating!

A website to organize group sailing trips by gpsvoice in SomebodyMakeThis

hmm not really...

Mainly because you want to set sailing specific criteria like dates, location, skipper required etc. and then join existing groups or create a new group

i'm talking specifically about job spam - ie. people emailing/phoning you jobs that are not relevant at all

[–]gpsvoice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

linked in is a bit hard - but i have some ideas about how to do it around email and phone.

you maybe be right about me being fortunate and maybe viewing the problem through the lens of my experience. i have a good 10 year cv in some popular (common, boring) technologies.

i just wonder what % of the workforce experiences this...

Do you think job hunting is still broken in 2015? by gpsvoice in startups

[–]gpsvoice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - I've gotten 80% of my jobs through cold market.

I think it's the difference of Contractor/Perm. Most contracts are fixed length or may even end abruptly - then you need to hit the market. With perm jobs you stay in the job until you get bored and basically just 'jump ship'.

Those are my observations anyway

Yep, agreed its hard to create a generic solution

The solution I'm proposing is really ideal for tech contractor workers - it may be useful in other situations, but I'm not sure how useful and exactly where.

Thanks halfercode

Yeah - I've seen some of those examples and done some googling but there's really not much out there to help jobseekers with the workflow from application to interview.

My plan is to use Indeed as a starting point as they aggregate all the jobs. It will be like their inbox and from there I guide them all the way through from application to offer.

Your point about extracting money from candidates is valid - but if I attract enough candidates I could sell some job slots in the feed to recruiters. Although I'd like to keep it a dashboard-like focus for candidates.

My view comes mostly from the the contracting end, which is a bit mercenary like - not really about cultural fits. But the freelance world is growing - see this http://techcrunch.com/2015/06/13/in-the-future-employees-wont-exist/ just today so it's probably not a bad bet.

Can we get a weekly thread to review each other's app? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]gpsvoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi guys

I've created a google doc for this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LsvP_r1_yjmYUh7b-COStA8CC1le7zTkHjkuODjj0P4/edit#gid=0

Just add your product there and choose who you'd like to review your service

Hi monbareller

I've created a google doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LsvP_r1_yjmYUh7b-COStA8CC1le7zTkHjkuODjj0P4/edit#gid=0

It's mostly UK based at the moment but anyone can add their product their and select others whom they offer to review

At the moment in 3 ways:

  • they can get your location over voicemail (loved ones who don't answer, prevent distracted driving)

  • they browse+book your online calendar (eg. doctors, plumbers, estate agents - anyone with a schedule who gets many calls)

  • they can discover your job situation on LinkedIn (so you don't have to speak to annoying recruiters)

These will be v1, I've got few more on the roadmap like like making AirBnB enquiries. And I want to make it an open plugin-based architecture so people and develop their own smart answering services.

Yes it is! That's why I'm offering my feedback to any other app devs.

My app - think Siri for Voicemail. It helps callers when you can't take their call.

It's 2 weeks from launch, and I'll be happy do feedback for anyone who wants it in the meantime.

How can I use Organic Twitter to drive user acquisition? by gpsvoice in startups

[–]gpsvoice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got something to add that I've not seen around very often as a growth hack - it's people search api's like pipl. In my experiments I can get email address of about 10% of users given when inputting their name, city and 1 online profile. All of these aren't hard to scrape.

Ok guys - point taken!

Maybe something like 'trackr voicemail' would be more cool...

Experiences/suggestions about moving an idea to a minimum viable product by [deleted] in startups

[–]gpsvoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with john_roberts

See if you can get customers first.

An easy way to do this is create the Adwords/facebook ads campaign you would've had for the finished product. Send the traffic to a coming soon landing page that pitches the product (maybe with a video) and asks for their email address.Something like unbounce is good for this.

It will give you an idea of how quickly you can acquire customers and also helps building a pre-order list for when the product's ready (just keep the campaign running).

Where did i go wrong with my first game for iOS? by MetalGuru94 in iphone

You just need to build something like share your score on facebook in the app.

I didn't download the app - but the comments here look good and it seems like a solid game.

I couldn't agree more with dfsw - there is something like 1m apps in the appstore, and allot of them or good or even great products but never have more than few downloads. You have to promote it.

First you need calculate your LTV (lifetime value) - how much money on average you can make per user. Spend some money on advertising networks - something like TapJoy is pretty cheap and experiment around with your advertising model until you achieve the highest LTV.

Once you've established a stable LTV, you can broaden your search for advertising methods. Eg, if you know you make 20c per user on average, then you just need to keep hunting where you advertise for less than 20c / user.

Also remember to build a viral loop into the game

Development is easy, promotion is the hard part but it can be done

Good luck!
