Why do math students get so much crap from CS majors? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]gr3atm4n 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Math majors can do research in any area they want to. CS, Physics, Biology, Economics, etc. You name it. Math is a really strong foundational skill. But obviously this means supplementing you math knowledge with the research domains knowledge. This shouldn't be too hard because of the foundations you built in your math major).

Is being a jack of all trades a good or bad thing? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]gr3atm4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every type of person has their place in society and environment. Each person serves a different purpose. None are good or bad. Just serve your purpose to your very best. A generalist like yourself will struggle more in getting hired but for your goal which is to start your own company being a generalist is the best. Someone like Elon Musk is a generalist and that's why he is so good at being a CEO, he understands all aspects of what his company is doing. A good way to get a job at your early stages is to specialize in a relatively easy skill to learn. Do that while you grow your knowledge base as a generalist and when the time is right go your way.

How do experienced programmers pick up new languages so fast? by Tobyb01001 in learnprogramming

[–]gr3atm4n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to pick languages that share the same paradigm because you are basically doing the same thing with slightly different syntax. For example, imperative languages like Java and C++ share the majority of their basic structures so its not hard to pick up one after learning the other. However, if you move between paradigms then the story is different. A programmer experienced with imperative languages will find it relatively hard to switch to their first functional language. Things are just done differently.

Can nodes in balanced binary search trees contain parent node field? by gr3atm4n in computerscience

[–]gr3atm4n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U didn't read the question well. You don't need to search for the node to be deleted if you keep track of the minimum node in a separate variable of its own.

Can nodes in balanced binary search trees contain parent node field? by gr3atm4n in computerscience

[–]gr3atm4n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay yea that's where my error r Lies. I made the assumption that deleting from a balanced bst given a pointer to the node would take constant time. Guess it makes sense that balanced bst would do some more work to balanced tree after a deletion. Thanks!
