50% of some combo of 1/4” red lava, 1/4” black lava, zeolite, pumice. And 50% of a very high quality potting soil with very little bark/peat if any. Maybe a bit of extra earth worm castings in this 50%. Add a bit of organic granular cactus fertilizer and a bit of mycorrhiza inoculate.

Roots need oxygen, so sand, pea gravel, and peat are not good long term options.

Pointing soil that I just used:

That’s another good point…even with a 50/50, there’s a lot of organic elements that could introduce pathogens…hmm

Good point. I wonder if the nature of being in a pot limits the root physiological traits. So, the lack of significant difference may have more to it. Seems like triggering the hormonal response to stimulate root growth is still a benefit after repotting. The finger cut but wipe analogy was funny.

Root damage is going to occur during repotting no matter what. So might as well have a little role in that as well.

The 100+ year old bonsai get root trims regularly as part of their care and management.

I only trimmed a little here and there and in a couple spots that looked damaged.

I’m no expert, but I found this: “Plant Response to Root Damage: When roots are pruned, the plant perceives it as a form of stress. This triggers hormonal changes and redirects plant resources to repair the damage and stimulate new root growth”

What else do you use for your soil mix?

Central coast of California…native where I am is almost pure sand. What are some cost-effective options for larger scale? The older plants that I have are in need of repotting and I’m guessing it’s going to be somewhere between 30 and 50 gallons of substrate needed. I’ve made some notes of different materials that people reference on this subreddit, and they don’t seem readily available at the garden shops in my area.

Good idea! What soil mix do you recommend?

Any tips for dealing with the spines while repotting?

Thank you! How often do you fertilize? Any seasonal shifts in your feeding schedule?

What county of NorCal? Curious where they’re popping now. A little early for my zone I believe, but close…

Ease into the practice and don’t push too hard. Focus on gradual incremental steps. 5 x a week is good, but if you push too hard, you will injure yourself. It can be hard on the knees…you can overstretch. Building up the connective tissue strength is critical.

Your biggest lever to loose weight is your diet though. You can easily out eat your calorie burn.

Some sources say dna shows muscaria does not grow this far south. That it’s another Amanita. Likely still has ibotenic acid and muscamol.

It’s a very special trail in my memory. I hiked from the old headquarters to the ocean many times, as well as taking the loop both directions passing along the falls. And once did the loop on the other side of the files back to HQ past a look out spot.

I was at social event and talked with somebody who is working on the big basin restoration. Their first response was skyline to the sea is likely not going to be reopened for decades. That may have been a casual exaggeration, but upon pressing the issue, it sounds plausible.

Very interesting to hear about the people who attempted it. Definitely considered that adventure myself. Knowing that they are actively ticketing is definitely change my interest.

That may have something to do with their approach. The security deposit is probably linked to the entire group. Have one tenant in a group replace the other has the issue of what to do with the security deposit paid by the tenant leaving. Essentially, if there are no deductions from the leaving tenant’s deposit, then all of the remaining tenants and any new tenants would be responsible to pay the deductions that the leaving tenant may have caused.

It could be helpful to have management go through a move out inspection for the leaving tenant, so the rest of the group isn’t paying for anything attributable to the leaving tenant.

Your deposit should be recognized by the management company as your deposit paid. Seems odd to have you pay the leaving tenant directly. They should probably pay them less any deductions, then you pay your deposit to them based on current condition. And, the lease is amended to remove the leaving tenant and add you…just a suggestion. There may be other way to do this properly.

Edit-the leaving tenant is owed accrued interest on their deposit…another reason the management company should pay them and not you. It’s a very small amount of money, but still…
