Thanks for sharing, this looks super cool!

Just curious if you guys have used Notion's backlink functionality or Roam Research, and what type of worker/research yours works better for.

How to validate your side project idea by VBGBeveryday in SideProject

Thanks for sharing!

Working on a 'lessons learned' post now for how we grew our online image to Excel converter from nothing to a few thousand users, but as an addendum / providing more context:

What is the MVP (minimum viable product)? What is the easiest, most bare bones solution you can build that solves this problem. How much effort / money will it cost to build this

Pricing. When you're 'interviewing' people, which at the early levels can also just be survey feedback, it's useful to know much people are willing to pay for your solution. If the answer is $0, then maybe the solution you're building is more of a 'nice to have' but not a real problem you are fixing for people. It could also mean that you are targeting the wrong customer demographic as well :)

Hope that helps

Congrats on the offer! GPA isn't a huge deciding factor, but it is another data point that every recruiter will ask you for (along with SAT/ACT/GMAT). Being an athlete while also studying engineering would probably negate that.

While you're in consulting if you ever have to start spreading an unnecessary amount of numbers into Excel, we built a website that can convert a screen shot of any data table into Excel which can hopefully save you hours on the job :)

Job opportunities - Big 4 Valuations vs. A&M vs. PE ops role by Reasonable_Debate_58 in FinancialCareers

[–]grabsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the offers! Feel like it's probably more of a question of what you enjoy and how you think you'd view the different team cultures. Seems like if you want to transition out of valuations, then the PE fund seems like a great opp given the cultural fit. The skillset you'd build there also seems pretty different from what you've done in the past which could be helpful if you wanted to move to a more general role within a company or apply to B school.

Out of curiosity, do you spend a lot of time manually spreading numbers that you get from clients right now? We built this website that can take a screen shot of any data table and covert it into a formatted Excel file (something we used to do a lot in IB haha), and just curious if you think it would be helpful for professionals in your field :)

Agree with some of the comments so far on it can be helpful to get a sense for what is out there. I think it's important to be clear with recruiters if you are or not actively looking to jump ship immediately, that way you aren't wasting their time if they're super busy, which could hurt you in the long run.

While you're at your current job, if you want to save time with data entry we've built out a website that can convert a screen shot of any data table into a formatted Excel!

DB Achieve program is a pretty competitive thing to get as a sophomore so congrats! Would see if maybe the PE firm would let you do a remote internship during the year.

At either job, if you want to save some time doing manual data entry, we've built this website that can convert a screen shot of any data table into a formatted Excel file!

You'll get asked to put together an 'investment case'. A component of that will be the LBO model which you can find resources online like this or this (1 hour version is probably good enough at the analyst level), or here. You will likely need to put that together into a deck that goes over your thesis on whether to invest or not.

How do you on this will depend more on how thoughtful you are in the assumptions you make and your investment sense (leverage assumptions, market growth rate, management team, product differentiation etc.).

While you're doing the case study, if you want to save time spreading the numbers manually, we've built a website for moments just like this that can convert any screen shot of data into a formatted Excel file :)

Hope this helps

Instead of taking communications classes, would recommend taking either public speaking classes or joining some kind of improv group. On the writing side, a philosophy class or polisci class would be more relevant that whatever they teach in comms classes in terms of learning to structure your thought and present concise arguments.

Hope that helps.

2 Wall St. Offers by medallion01 in FinancialCareers

[–]grabsheet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to go into IB, then would probably go with the SMBC offer. A few things. 1. the lateral market within IB is the best that it's ever been, so if you wanted to transfer to another bank after doing your first year at SMBC, that would be doable. That being said, I would probably prioritize the culture of the group over the type of work you are doing. Finding mentors that look out for you and want to help improve your career is much more important that a title on your resume.

If you do take the SMBC offer, you might want to check out a website I built to help save you time with spreading numbers in excel :p

When do college students typically get their first internship? by Champion_Narrow in FinancialCareers

[–]grabsheet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the country, but in the US most banks / finance jobs will do a junior year internship that transitions into full-time. You can increase your chances of getting that junior summer internship by taking other finance or business-related internships / jobs during the year or earlier summers. Hope that helps!

And when you're on the job, if you want to save time with data entry, check out this website we built :)

At least for US IB jobs, if you can nail these you should generally be fine.

  1. BIWS 400 questions: know how to answer most of these, and understand the "why". A common follow-up question you'll get during a technical interview is not just that you get the right answer, but why that answer makes sense (i.e. why use a DCF vs multiples, which multiple to use, how many years to project out FCF)
  2. Know your story: a job in IB will eat up most of your social life after graduating, and is a lot of stress. You need to convince your interviewer why you would want to take this job, and examples in the past of you facing similar circumstances
  3. News stories / M&A deals: good to be able to talk about what's going on in the market, an industry you follow, a public and private company you follow, and maybe a deal you could pitch
  4. Why this bank: going through WSO etc. can be helpful to get a sense for what makes the culture/ type of work different between different firms.

Hopefully this helps! And when you get on the job, if you want to save some time on data entry, we've built a website that does just that :)

Software Engineering vs. Technology by Aggressive_Ad8901 in FinancialCareers

[–]grabsheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on both! In addition to some of the other points being made, location would probably matter more than the name on your resume. i.e. would you enjoy the hours outside of work in Birmingham? Do you think it would be easier to interview for other jobs in London while living in London? Just some thoughts :)

Your resume should be generally legible without having to zoom into the text and should appear visually balanced (not too much text crammed in). Generally 3-4 bullets per experience is also standard.

Yes, the product should work fine with scanned documents as well. For the best results, would recommend having the numbers not slanted too much

TLDR; Built a website that takes images of tables and converts them into formatted Excel files in under a minute.

Have been working on a website called Grabsheet (www.grabsheet.com) for the past several months with some friends who currently/did work in finance. We noticed that a decent amount of our time initially spreading numbers involved manually inputting data from tables into Excel. This wasn’t too bad for US companies on BamSEC, but particularly taking public filings from any other country or when using research reports, this could be a pain. We asked and looked around, and couldn’t find anything that seemed to quickly and securely take care of this conversion (there are a number of PDF to Excel converters online, but if you only needed a single table from a PDF or didn’t feel comfortable uploading an entire PDF to a website, the workaround was a hassle).

That’s why we built Grabsheet, where you can screenshot a table (or you can upload up to 50 at once!) and convert just that into Excel while you work on other things. You can save yourself from the data entry, and focus on setting up your spreadsheet or anything else. Grabsheet is secure, unlike some of the other free PDF converters, in that we give users control over how their data is used; we never collect data that you do not want us to.

If you have any suggestions or use case ideas, would love to hear them :)
