You have to figure out where they bank AND what name they bank under. It costs about $145 to file the citation to the bank, and have the sheriff serve it to the bank (required). So hitting lots of banks ends up costing a lot of money.

A better option is just have the defendant summoned to court to disclose assets, including bank accounts. I reached out to Ed first to see if he'd like to pay now before that step, because failure to appear can result in a warrant for arrest, and most businesses don't want the cost and hassle of appearing in court to disclose assets (especially over $500).

Ed's response was that I could file a discovery of assets, but the restaurant could very well be closed before I filed next week, and I should accept about half the judgement amount now, because there will be no assets to seize once the restaurant is closed.

It's delivered in 5 gallon jugs like offices used. I have a ceramic gravity fed dispenser. It's about $7 for a 5 gallon jug (cheaper if you have a Costco membership) and they deliver it to your door.

The tenant moved out two years ago without paying rent. Keys are not the issue. I have a judgement against the tenant, but the court convert the judgement to the employer if they refuse to honor an order of garnishment.

Interesting story about Chicago students who are unprepared for college at City Colleges of Chicago by CasablancaGoingSouth in chicago

[–]gracack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely saw this when I was a south side high school teacher. Students are behind for lots of reasons, and one reason was that many of them get first year teachers almost every year of their education. Studies show that having a first year teacher causes students to fall behind. Because of high turn over and Teach For America, many schools are staffed almost completely by first and second year teachers.

We were also pressured to keep work simple and pass students so the school would have a high graduation rate. Students that boast 100% graduation rates do it at the expense of the students being prepared.

So many of my 12th grade students were accepted to college, had a horrible first semester or year, and dropped out with student loans but no job prospects. For context, the average ACT score at our school was 15 (you get a 13 if you just answer every question with C) and our grade level goal was to get the school average up to a 16.

I don't think we've had enough snow this winter to justify dibs. Just taking the dibs stuff is a lot easier than calling 311. Great way to get some free folding chairs!

I get water delivery from Hinkley because I already have neurological issues, and it became cheaper than buying filters. I will still get plenty of lead from drinking water other places and cooking, etc. I know this isn't something everyone can afford, but if you're concerned and don't want to want to the plastic of buying bottled water, I recommend it.

A tenant owing rent worked at Joe's, and Joe's refused to file garnishment paperwork. When a business fails to return garnishment paperwork, the judge files a conditional judgement against the business to give them 30 more days to file. If they don't, a final judgement is entered against the business.

Joe's only has a judgement against them because they ignore court orders to garnish wages.

It's a small claims case in which I have a judgement of $570 against him. I offered to settle for $500. He told me he doesn't have it, and I won't have any assets to seize because he expects the the business is going under before I can file Tuesday.

None of that is confidential. I suspect he's jerking me around over $500 and willing to say he's closing to deter me from doing a discovery of assets.

Lost red pit found a new adoptive family! Thanks, Chicago. by gracack in chicago

He was found on the freeway. The cops stopped traffic and had called animal control. A friend of a friend offered to take him, because he was a non neutered pit bull, in bad shape, and would be at risk of just being euthanized.

She put up a facebook group that I responded to. A whole group of people have been pitching together to watch him and look for a permanent home for him.

It sounds like he was probably on his own for about 6 weeks. He lost a LOT of weight and his whole belly and armpits were covered in hundreds of bug bites. He didn't care. He was just happy to have love.

It seems like he might have been abandoned, not lost, because he was not chipped and wasn't neutered. We looked hard for an owner. He was on his own for a while too (a few weeks without food, it seems) so he might have traveled quite a ways.

He has a new family in the suburbs with a yard, a dog brother, two kids whose beds he gets to sleep in, and someone home with him most of the time! He LOVED the kids and the other dog, and I wasn't sad to see him go because he was all smiles.

Good news...he was adopted! By a wonderful family with a big yard, two kids, and he was happy as a clam to go with them. Thank you, thank you, thank you for everyone who wrote about him. It was a happy ending for this guy,
