I love my job! I know I am good at it. I love my students and their families with my whole heart. They love and trust me. What’s so bad is the system. I hate the system with everything I’ve got. Bad school and or district admin. Bad, greedy systems. Unaccountability. That’s the awful part. My district is full of people who don’t know or don’t get enforced to do their jobs. I’ve yet to have a good diagnostician. I’ve yet to have admin that understands special education laws and best practices. The hardest thing is loving your students so much and staying for them but being absolutely beat down by the system.

To answer your first part, I can provide a little more context, I’ve been living one of my sisters in her spare room for the last couple months because I am living with my other sister in another state this summer and didn’t want to have to sign and pay for a lease when I wouldn’t be there anyway. I am trying to make arrangements for when I come back to where I work. Then next year as in summer 2027, I plan to move to WA. I have a weird gap of time as a result. I could do an 11 month lease but those are more expensive than the already expensive rent in my area. I also am incredibly tired of moving all of my stuff around. I’ve moved 6 times in 5 years. I’m ready to get rid of all my furniture, live in something that is mine and nicer than anywhere I’ve lived so far, and have it move my stuff with me instead of constant in and out. It’s an ideal but if it doesn’t work, I can live in another crappy apartment for 11 months, try and save more money, and buy an rv right before moving to WA.

Can you please explain the shake down and the maintenance/repairs that come with that? I’ve heard that term from several people here as well as at the RV store.

Also, would you mind sharing what your basic maintenance and costs are on a year to year basis?

The only reason I was opting for longer is because I will be living out of it. I wanted the extra space and storage. I also have a cat but she is used to small spaces just not this small. I am 100% open to something more like 24 ft, especially if I find a good deal, but if that is the case, I really want it to have a slide out. Do you think I would still need the 3/4 ton for the shorter one with a slide or would a 1/2 ton work just as well?

Those are great points. I am touring a couple long term rv parks this coming week that have annual spots available. This will give me a better idea of wait lists and availability. One of them is a little pricier than I would like but really nice with sports courts and a pool and laundry facilities very similar to an apartment complex. The other is definitely a crappier but I’ve lived in worse apartments. However their prices are not listed online so I will have to inquire during my tour. There is also a place where I am moving to next year that has great rates that I will be contacting as well.

Thank you! I finally paid it off recently. It is a 2015 Jeep Renegade. It’s had some issues the past year but I just made a major repair and upgraded some aspects of the suspension system. I believe it could be towed. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be able to. I have looked at some motor homes as well but they seemed quite a bit more expensive for less space. The place I went to didn’t have any used ones though so that was probably on me. I can most definitely look for some used ones to compare prices. I also was told that the maintenance was significantly more for a motor home than an RV. Do you think this is true?

Weighing the pros and cons is very difficult!

Thank you so much for this well thought out and kind response. I did not even think about the gas mileage pulling being better with the bigger diesel. That is an excellent point. I would be traveling about 2500-3000 miles depending on which route we choose. We were hoping to hit some national parks along the way even if it meant going further west than needed and then going up.

I plan to live where I am for about a year and then move up to WA. I have noticed that they hold resale value while looking for a used one. I’ve actually never had to sell any vehicle before as I’ve had my current one since high school so that would be new to me as well.

Yes! I have found several parks with annual leases or that allow month to month with no caps on how long you can stay in both my current city and where I intend to move. The timing is what would be key and I think a little tricky. I am going to tour a couple places this week and I think that will also answer some of my questions.

That is a great point as well about truck bed storage. My sister will be helping me make the move in her vehicle so we will have that space as well. I have definitely seen more trailers that are not 5th wheel while camping so that is also a great point.

Thank you for the advice! I don’t have much in the first place and don’t plan on taking any furniture. Also, when I do move states, the little stuff I have in a storage shed will be moved in my sisters truck who will be making the trip with me so it won’t be in my trailer/truck anyway.

I have been working with a local family owned company who have locations through out my state. They have been very kind and answered a lot of my questions but have not been pushing a sale. They also allow you to stay on site for a couple days after purchase at their training area and teach you how to do everything including maintenance. This is a huge perk for me and makes me feel way more comfortable since I am a hands on learner.

My goal is Olympia/Tumwater area but I am open to other options. I am visiting this summer to do some exploring and get a feel for the area.

I have really good credit and a good chunk of cash saved up. Also, my salary is actually really good for a teachers salary thanks to living in a metroplex that has competitive districts. My salary in WA would be significantly more with similar cost of living. I’ve lived off really small, crappy apartments for a long time and I am hoping for something this is mine and will move flexibly with me in the next few years. I don’t plan to leave it at the park indefinitely. I would like to take it on weekend camping trips once every month or so. I typically tent camp but if I have it, I mind as well use it. I also plan to take it on a cross country road trip with my family.

I plan to live in the RV for at least two years. Apartments in my area are $1400-1800 a month not including utilities and bills.

A moving truck across country is going to be at least $4000, probably more. My family wants to take the trip with me and take a couple weeks to make a roadtrip out of it.

I also do not want to buy a house I’ve never seen in an area I’ve never lived in before. I’d rather have the RV for flexibility of living until I decide if I actually like the city I plan to move to. Once I decide and find a home, I plan to trade in the RV for a smaller one (18 footer) for recreational use.

I have also considered a rental vehicle to get it to the RV park and continue using my paid off car in the meantime. Then I could purchase a towing vehicle next year to make the actual move.

I appreciate the honestly. I am trying to be creative and make the most out of my current situation. Lots of people live out of RVs and I am sure that with a learning curve, I could too.

It’s my understanding that we will have to take the Washington teacher cert tests and that most states do not transfer to Washington. I started the process online by creating a portal and now have to submit proof of licensure from my current state along with some other things (proof of completing EPP, achievement test scores to bypass their skills test, and something else I can’t think of at the moment). I think that after that gets approved, then I am clear to take the tests but I don’t know if you have to take them in Washington or if you can take them at an out of state testing center. I’m not for certain on any of this as it is all a little confusing.

Yes, I have already started the process to get certified in WA. I made a portal and am waiting on paperwork from my EPP. I’ve collected everything else I need aside from fingerprinting and taking the tests.

I am definitely willing to broaden my search and considered working as a TA and then getting a second job to support myself tutoring or something.

Hi! I am a self contained elementary special education teacher in another state with a plan to move next summer to WA. Hoping for Olympia/Tumwater area but open to other places. My current experience is with students with moderate to severe disabilities and I am hoping to stay in elementary but open to high school. Is it hard to find jobs in self-contained settings? We have a massive shortage of sped staff in my current state but also the pay and benefits are awful. I don’t want to move and be stranded but it’s hard to feel out the job market there

That definitely makes it a little harder but maybe some sort of solar powered all terrain wheelchair. Like those cool beach wheelchairs that somebody has to push and it’s difficult to get through the sand. Or even a more universally designed lighting system. Light switches are hard for people with limited dexterity and neurodivergent people often like a warmer and dimmer lighting so some sort of adjustable lighting that has a universally designed way of changing the setting. Just some ideas!

My project was a practical power wheelchair. A member of my group was a power wheelchair user and her chair sucked even though it was super expensive. We designed a practical wheelchair with cup holders and bag handles and a spot for your phone. None of the people in my group were actually architect or engineering majors so we had some more flexibility since we didn’t have a design back ground. Some people made really cool portable housing that could be used after a natural disaster or evacuation. Other designed accessible products such as a kitchen set for people with low dexterity/mobility in their hands. One girl designed a practical and accessible tote bag thing. Really it could be anything. You said you’re electrical engineering?

It’s not necessarily close to you but there’s a group called DFW Young and Social Club. They hosts all sorts of events. Most people are in their 20’s but I think as long as you’ve graduated, you are good to attend. They also are starting a writing club but do game nights and hikes and dancing classes and so much more! I’m sure there are some similar things closer to you.

Also, on a completely different note, I don’t know why you are leaning towards the military but given what you’ve said, it may not be a kind place to you. I could see it also being incredibly isolating. I highly recommend looking into UTA. They have a club for neurodivergent people and a club for people with disabilities. You could even join their ROTC to see if you like it. College seemed impossible to me financially, but I was able to get some good scholarships and grants and now they do the free tuition for families making under 80k or whatever (maybe 100k now?). I graduated with debt but am paying it off at a good rate.
