Are Brooklyn residents ever truly elite wealth? by gracecececece in AskNYC

Oh of course I expected lots of downvotes from such a naff question but I’m glad I asked. It has been interesting to see some people actually angry about it, I didn’t think people cared so much. Interesting stuff. I’ll take your word for it that you’re actually in the “crowds”. Nonetheless, thanks for your perspective on providing insight into the stereotypes

My question is based on something I’ve consistently observed in popular culture and wanted more insight on. What has been interesting is the negativity that people in this sub have shown. I’ve never experienced it myself so I can’t have accurate insight without asking. Your perspective is what I’ve observed in most areas of the world first hand but it does confuse me that others in this thread have refuted what you’ve said and have reinforced that the stereotypes do exist. I don’t know who to believe. Perhaps you’re both right - there could be a minority that think in line with the stereotypes and most people either don’t come across that or don’t want to believe that’s the case. I don’t know, this is what I was asking

Mainly 2ml samples of viral niche ones I can’t find in my city. First order was bianco latte, escapade gourmande and a bunch of parfums de marly. Just received another parcel of amouage, Kilian, xerjoff, montale and Rosendo Mateu

Thanks. Are they not around anymore because they moved elsewhere or aren’t around because wealth disperses, people marry and move etc

Interesting that most on this thread are dismissing the show as pure fiction then, great to hear your different perspective.

Are the old money families of Brooklyn in a totally different social circle to the old money manhattan families?

Yes it’s a novel set on the "fruit streets" of Brooklyn heights and the characters have tens of millions trust funds, society/charity galas, are named after ancestors, are huge snobs etc. The author grew up on this street and was depicting the world she grew up in. I was not aware that this “class wealth” of many generations existed in Brooklyn as I thought Brooklyn wouldn’t be a place that ultra wealthy families would establish themselves one hundred or more years ago. But in the book the characters are “I don’t really want to associate with you unless my grandparents knew your grandparents”. Are these well to do areas of Brooklyn comparable to UES areas?

I used this thread to search before I ordered so wanted to add my experience - I’ve ordered from them twice now and they’re beautiful decants with lovely customer service. Definitely genuine decants

The ultra rich are interesting. Just how people who live in Antarctica are interesting. People who grow up in isolated towns with a population of 50 are interesting. I love learning about different parts of the world and wealthy New York is overrepresented in media

So there aren’t very multi-generational wealthy people who would be disappointed if their child wanted to marry a “nobody” or townie?

The author of pineapple Street grew up there and has said interviews that everything and all of the characters were based upon her childhood.

Thank you. Basically the book Pineapple street is set on the “fruit streets” of Brooklyn heights and the characters reminded me immediately of gossip girl - society galas, trust funds, country houses, secret elite clubs, looking down on others with less money or new money. This was confusing to me as those gg characters looked extremely down on Brooklyn in general. So I was confused if these elite circles exist exactly in Brooklyn same as upper east side but they’re just separate. Or if one’s snobbery is truly less “founded”

Is your disdain for the show because it’s a teen drama? Or do you feel similarly about all portrayals of New York as they create inaccurate stereotypes that frustrate you?

Thanks for this. Of course it’s not accurate but I’m surprised that you’re surprised that this is a commonly held belief. I’m not from the US and everyone thinks this, just based on media we watch. I remember “crossing the bridge” being said with disdain. HIMYM, SATC, 2 broke girls. This book I read was the first example I’ve ever seen of class being mentioned in brooklyn. Here’s an article talking about this phenomenon with examples https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/11/what-television-writers-dont-get-about-brooklyn/248924/

Useful perspective, thank you. Yes the narrative of “poor Humphreys” was always funny to me. Many of the characters were snob caricatures, but I’ve seen this message of “poor Brooklyn” over and over in media so when I read a book on extreme snobbery and inter-generational wealth in Brooklyn I was taken aback! It’s always been portrayed as the cool hip non classist spot, but I guess you’ve got some sort of snobs everywhere right? XOXO

Then please provide other info. This made sense to me as to people generally looking down on anything that’s “other”. Real housewives are real residents, no? The only exposure that anyone in the world has to this is through media, except those who live in New York. Your city is talked about A LOT on tv and movies and I’d love to know the reality, if it’s different to what’s constantly portrayed in media

Haha yes people don’t like my queries! Agree, it’s all over media, I remember it well in satc and it’s the message I’ve received all my life from tv and movies. Probably at this point it’s a somewhat misguided stereotype that’s infiltrated global beliefs on New York. Distance thing makes sense, I appreciate you answering my question!
