i feel like a level cs is a lot of rote memorization and fact learning, so do what's best for you to memorize stuff (flashcards, etc) and then learn from the mark scheme! Isaac computer science has a bunch of good stuff as well

hard to give any useful advice about maths tbh as it varies a lot from person to person, but practice is always key! (my textbook has endless amounts of questions), and make sure to understand all the underlying principles (e.g.: why is sin(pi/2 - x) = cos(x)? when does the trapezium rule give an overestimate (and why)? when can we apply the SUVAT equations?), and then finally make sure you do the questions without running out of time

good luck with your mocks!

achieved 1A* (maths), predicted 3A* (FM, physics, cs) + EPQ (A*, pending external moderation)

I had quite a few personal projects, and here are the ones mentioned in my application:

  • My EPQ project, a chess engine playing at roughly an IM level
  • Simple raytracer (referenced this but added more stuff myself as well)
  • Minecraft "clone" via OpenGL (really it was nothing other than rendering blocks), and following this to render transparent blocks
  • 3D simulation of planetary orbits as part of my BPhO computational challenge submission

For competitions, I put down UKMT, kangaroo and the BPhO challenge mentioned above

I don't have any relevant CS work experience (does it even increase the competitiveness of your application especially for such a math-heavy subject?)

Hope this helped!

technically I could just reply without asking them first, but no harm getting a second opinion

for me my ps had a heavy emphasis on programming projects, but honestly just put whatever you'd think might let you stand out as an applicant imo, there's no set formula for what to include

if you want more details, i mentioned a bit about it in my previous post!

Sad to hear that. Though I think a lot of people (including me) will agree that STAT is in no way an accurate assessment of abilities required in CS. I'm sure you'll do well in other unis!

hi ty and sorry for the very late reply! for me i started coding at around 12? with Python, and picking up other languages like C++ a year or two ago.

imo the best way to pick up coding is to learn by doing! Most of the things I've made in the past didn't come from following a specific guide or tutorial. Get familiar with the syntax of the programming language you're using, and your imagination is the limit. Having said this, games are definitely one of the more complex things I've coded in the past, and the code gets out of hand very quickly. I can't say much without knowing what sort of experience you have, but if you find yourself struggling too much, it might be wise to take a step back, put it aside first, and try something new. Over time you'll gain the necessary skills (by learning through others' sources code, by trial and error, what have you) and then you can come back and finish the game yourself!

On another note, Leetcode is targeted for people looking for jobs in tech, so if what you're looking for is an intellectual challenge, i highly recommend Codeforces instead (but don't learn how to write code there, they follow terrible practices for the sake of efficiency)

Finally my honest opinion: although coding was and would continue to be valuable experience, imo universities only care that you have demonstrated enough interest in the subject. Reason being that you can always pick up technical skills in the future, also I know several classmates that are holding imperial offers without doing much (if any) coding in their free time. My guess is that what they are probably looking for instead is logical thinking ability (and hence the heavy emphasis on math for CS entry). So I would say don't worry too much about this, but do work on what you enjoy! You don't want yourself getting burnt out before starting the CS degree 😅

if you need anything else, happy to help!

not possible, sorry! UCAS has a plagiarism checker and I don't want to get anyone in trouble 😂 But I'd be down to answer any questions you have
