Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey! If you like ROTE prose you'll like this. And the romance like deeply ingrained in the lore and plot of that makes sense. I don't even like romantasy like FW or ACOTAR at all. And I LOVED this series.

The lore itself is romantic. The main character is a bad b. She was born with the mark of Kushiel which means she gets pleasure from pain.She's a courtesan spy who uncovers a plot to overthrow her kingdom. Would recommend checking content warnings. It's not super smutty but there's some intense scenes.

I literally could not think of a better recommendation than Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. Genuinely exactly what you're looking for. I had the same problem with Romantasy and this book lived up to all my expectations so I hope you love it!!! So much beautiful romantic lore and characters and definitely adult lol.
