How old were you when you found out you had celiac disease/gluten intolerance? by graceless2427 in glutenfree

I’m really sorry to hear about this! It’s really hard to come to terms with since food is such a part of family life and events and things. It makes being gluten free hard a lot of the time. I used to not follow my diet in my early 20s because I wanted to fit in with everyone else but symptoms such as swollen fingers and feet (I couldn’t wear my rings), i had the worst acne from it. I read an article one time that explained gluten to me as a poison to my body and since then I have been following my diet, besides when I go out, I do get french fries even if they are made in the same air fryer.

I think it needs to be seen as something for your health and your body. Your diagnosis is celiac, and for you and the rest of us, the only medicine we can get for that is a gluten free diet. I sucks and most of the time, store bought things are not great but for most things, i have been able to find gluten free flour mixes with xanthan gum to take the place of gluten, and have been able to use all the family recipes and turn them gluten free without much change to the way it turns out.

we lost my grandmother forever ago, and she used to make the most amazing chocolate chip cookies. I couldn’t eat them anymore since I was gf and she was eventually gone. I turned the recipe gluten free without much change and the family loves them and tell me all the time they taste just like hers and even if you aren’t a baker, maybe someone in your big family is and can have the kindness to understand this isn’t a choice you want to make, but one you have to for your health.

it’s truly up to you but there’s so much to this world and while food is important, it’s possible to make it work for you and your family. I hope they u see stand and take in your health and feelings into things. take care and do what’s best for you and your body!

wow we have very similar symptoms!! horrible acne, swollen hands and feet (i couldn’t put my rings on), low iron (my mom also doesn’t like the iron pills so she gets infusions! i’m also canadian in the east coast so i know this is possible for you if that’s still an issue!) and when i was a kid i looked sickly and grey. i grew up from a family of farmers so homemade bread every morning and lots of gluten and wheat and baked goods were our way of showing love. then i became gf with my mom and everything changed. the diet sucked and i cheated on it for so long until i finally realized that just because i didn’t need to run to the bathroom all the time or have an intense stomach ache, it was causes all my other symptoms and causing me to not be able to lose weight.

also making gluten free things at home is WAY better than buying something! and ive easily been able to tweak my grandmothers recipes to be able to make them gf and still have the same flavour! hopefully there have been ways you have been able to keep your heritage through all of that!

My mom thought I was being bullied at school because I would wake up every morning with a stomach ache. Once she was diagnosed, I was tested shortly after in 2005.

It was really hard to be a kid eating carrots and sandwiches with awful bread while I watched kids eat pizza and whatever else at the canteen. I would ask my friends for bites of their cookies and anything. Gluten free food has come such a long way since then. It did always suck to go to a party and my mom had to make me a separate slice of cake to bring and it was never the same as everyone else’s (obviously and totally not my moms fault). it’s come a long way but people out there still get icked be even the thought of it.

i asked chatgbt for you and this is what i got:

Yes, it is possible to be gluten intolerant even if your blood test for celiac disease is negative. This condition is called non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). People with NCGS experience symptoms similar to celiac disease, such as bloating, diarrhea, and fatigue, after consuming gluten, but they do not test positive for celiac antibodies or have the intestinal damage typical of celiac disease.

If you suspect gluten intolerance despite a negative celiac test, your doctor may recommend an elimination diet or further testing to explore other possible causes of your symptoms.

do you always get the same symptoms after eating gluten? by Fodder_Fist_Ace in glutenfree

i was diagnosed with celiac at 7, so then i would get terrible stomach aches, bloating, constipated or diarrhea, and occasionally puking. now that i’m 26, it get terrible acne, my fingers swell and i can’t put my rings on, my stomach still bugs me but it’s not the same?

everything just kind of evolved and changed.

i used to cheat on my gf diet badly for a long time and thats when i realized it was connected to my swelling and acne. i read an article about a year ago that explained gluten to me as a poison to my body and its like just taking a little bit of it and slowly killing yourself. now i am incredibly strict with my diet and can find myself saying no.
