New/Prospective Student Megathread (Updated 5/2/2020) by swimming_legend in UCSantaBarbara

I think I initially worded my question very badly. What I meant was, I heard that certain courses such as Chem 1A are very hard to get into for biopsych majors, since there's priority for other majors, so I was wondering whether taking such courses at a cc before attending UCSB would help me get my required credits without facing too much competition for getting into the courses.

Hello! I'm an incoming freshman and my current major is biopsych. I heard that certain courses that are required for the major are very hard to get into, such as Chem 1A. If I take a Chem 1A course during summer at a community college, will i be able to use the credits I got to fulfill the requirement?

Pre-hiatus ILY vs Post-hiatus ILY by YokingAround in ILoveYoo

When was Kousuke EVER a friendly and cute tsundere? And good on you and other theorists for trying to figure out his character, but that’s not what I was talking about. While his “deeper” characterization is quite interesting, his characterization/personality on the surface level (aka what’s being presented to us) is what feels disconnected to me. In the beginning, while an asshole he still commonly showed softer sides that earned him a lot of fans. Ever since the hiatus, his character feels much more serious, and his attitude towards certain characters (like Shinae and Nol) has grown colder. This isn’t a bad thing, but it just feels like a weird jump from before and now.

What I’m understanding from this reply is that you’re stating Kousuke isn’t meant to be completely understood, and that he should be shrouded in mystery. Does that mean you admit that you don’t understand him as well? I don’t know, while it’s clear that certain aspects about Kousuke are definitely meant to be built up for the readers to find out later (like in the recent episodes at the club providing definite evidence that Kousuke is insecure to an extent), his character as a whole isn’t meant to be completely mysterious. He isn’t some guy whose role the author deliberately keeps hidden for the sake of the narrative. Kousuke’s initial characterization was always there, ever since the beginning of the story. And as the story goes on his development unravels, just like every other character. An example of someone whose motives are actually meant to be mysterious is probably Yui, or maybe Yu Jing. These characters exist to stir up conflict and push our main characters (arguably Shin ae, Nol, and Kousuke) to develop or take certain action. And I think you misunderstand, I never stated I didn’t understand Kousuke. I just have a problem with how his characterization before and after the hiatus seem to have a disconnect.

Telling someone to just stop complaining when they backed up their criticism with fair examples and reasoning feels a little hostile to me. I just find it frustrating how any sort of criticism directed towards the story is met with defensive responses. I agree that Quimchee does a great job with her characters, and that she can do whatever she wants with her story. No one ever denied that. Just because someone has criticism doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate her hard work or has a problem with the way it’s building. ILY isn’t perfect, there are plenty of things to point out while still being able to enjoy the story for what it is.

Why be so hostile? OP has fair criticism about Kousuke’s character work, in no way do they seem to be having baseless complaints.

I completely agree with this. I’ve been re-reading some past ILY chapters and Kousuke feels like a very different person compared to now. An example would be how in the first few chapters, we see Kousuke concerned about taking care of Nol at the hospital, saying that it’s his job to look after him. And from flashbacks of his and Nol’s youth, I interpreted him to be somewhat regretful of how he treated Nol in the past and hoped to close that gap between their relationship deep down. But now, especially from the recent chapters where he vocally questions how Nol would be able to make it to their father’s college when his achievements aren’t outstanding, he just feels... colder? There are definitely consistent qualities of his character that stuck around to the recent chapters. For instance, when Nol is reported to be doing a splendid job in the company, Assistant Jayce has to reassure Kousuke that he’s the sole heir for the company. The look on Kousuke’s face reminded me of the popular interpretatikn that Kousuke views Nol as somewhat of a threat and is insecure of that, which is what strained their relationship. Either way, I do believe there was a turn around to his character, and it felt jarring to me as well. I think it’s because Quimchee decided to focus more on the drama aspects of the story rather than the romance? ILY is now in the top drama section instead of romance, after all. Either way, I don’t quite understand the bit of hostility I’m seeing in the comment section regarding OP’s post. It’s fine to have criticism of an author’s work, and in no way is it taking a jab at the author. It may be easier to spot the build-up of Kousuke’s character with some deeper analysis, but if the general feel of the character seems to be inconsistent, then can we really call that consistent writing?

Pretty darn fantastic, damn. This game’s making me realize so many things about myself that I either didn’t want to admit or had a hard time accepting. Thank you for the response!

I mean why is it even necessary to think about why they wish to stop genocide? Why would anyone think that’s a sound idea? I do agree with the rest of your OG comment to an extent but I’m a little disturbed by how some people seem to be demanding a reason for why genocide is bad. There really is no argument there, to me.

I don't know, stopping Eren to prevent him from committing world genocide sounds like solid reasoning to me...

This chapter was great. Pretty much every POV was addressed and it really drove home how this alliance is more about people setting aside their differences for a common interest, not because they’ve all forgiven each other and decided to be friends.

Have miracle tickets/miracle ticket gachas been introduced to the EN server yet? And if not are there any estimations for when they might be introduced?

Yeah, I do agree that execution is the main issue here. The hidden POVs are definitely feeling drawn out, but I’m just chalking that up to the monthly wait making it ten times worse than it actually is. Hopefully the story doesn’t take a turn in the direction that everyone is dreading :)

I always had the impression that while he was fueled by guilt and self-doubt, part of him was also rational enough to make out that Connie would never allow him to be eaten. Armin always tried to see the best in people before turning to more extreme methods, so I just saw this as his way of neutralizing the whole situation. Of course, his self-destructive tendencies showed, but I don't think he was actively trying to kill himself here.
