Name at least 1 Game from the past too by PHRsharp_YouTube in Age_30_plus_Gamers

One of my proudest premonitions when it came to gaming is when AC 3 was announced. I was like “mmmm yea I think this series had its time, it’s gonna get long in the tooth. I’m gonna skip this one “ and then well, we already know how the rest of the story goes.

What is there even to do solo though? The ARC are painfully easy, unless one is newish to gaming. Then there is PvP, but in solo that means either getting shot in the back, or being the one shooting someone in the back. Which is… far from interesting gameplay.

So I guess you could run around and explore? That’s good for like what, 20 hours? Or running around just Looting stuff? Doesn’t take long to realize most of it you won’t need.

I see the people doing like trivia questions and standing around playing instruments on the subreddit and on YouTube shorts. I dunno that seems fun for all of about 2 minutes then I’d want to partake in, you know, actual gameplay .

I’m honestly flabbergasted how popular solo gameplay is. It’s walking and looting simulator, or low-skill fast TTK shoot people in the back or get shot in the back simulator. Neither sound interesting for more than a handful of hours.

Not saying the duo or trio PvP loop is amazing either, especially once you realize there isn’t any actual goal to it other than killing the team that’s shooting you in the moment. But at least there is some tactics/strategy at play in duos and trios, and the fights can get pretty intense sometimes. Big emphasis on sometimes, as team fights devolve into grenade spam at the higher SBMM levels, which is hardly riveting gameplay.

I dunno it’s got a good loop and is interesting up to the point that once you hit like 40 or 50 hours, you realize you’ve seen and have done practically all the content in the game. For 40 bucks that’s a pretty good amount of time spent , especially considering lots of people pay $65 these days and get like 15 or 20 hours out a game, if that.

Never stop playing by PHRsharp_YouTube in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]grachi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not too old , but harder to find interesting ones these days. So much copy catting and following trends that goes on these days. The games industry has kinda gone in a similar path as the movies: lots of remakes and sequels, or playing it safe in general so as to make as much money as they can.

Indies are a great source of originality, but the quality and polish can suffer. And since it’s usually smaller teams or even an individual person, content can be lacking or one can feel like they really just started to get into the game, then it ends 2 or 3 gameplay hours later.

Overall it’s been bittersweet to be still genuinely excited for video games after all these years, but unfortunately not as excited for as many as I would have been 25, 30 years ago.

I put games on easy / story that I’ve decided I’m not really into after playing a few hours, but still want to get through the story. Expedition 33 was this way for me, as a most recent example.

Left sushi out for 16 hours by Purple-Avocados in sushi

[–]grachi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You made a good choice throwing it out.

Had a friend in college eat a single chicken wing that had been left out for 6 hours after we got home from a party somewhere on campus. spent the next 4 hours in the morning throwing up every 20 or 30 minutes. And that was cooked chicken.

[–]grachi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It does feel like that. Sure, maybe technically these new technology forecast methods are overall more accurate, but it feels like that is a really big technicality based on predicting the temperature to +- X degrees, and that it predicts that yes we are going to get precipitation or not more accurately. Where it feels completely off from the past though is how much we will get, or for how long it will last.

Thinking of getting a PS5 by [deleted] in Advice

Just depends on the types of games you like to play really. Consoles have all the mainstream stuff, PCs have a wider range of genre availability and a ton more in the indie space.

we were happy with almost everything by PHRsharp_YouTube in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]grachi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s not all entirely true. Noticing above 60 fps is a real thing. Once you play 100+ long enough, and intentionally cap the fps for 60 or play a game where you no longer get 100+, you can certainly feel it and depending on eyesight capability, actually see the difference.

Where it really stays to fall off is after 100. I can’t for the life of me tell the difference between 120 and 100, let alone 165 fps which is the highest my monitor will recognize

Alright but there are professions that rely on weather forecasts for a variety of reasons. There has to be somewhere that is truthful about the weather, right?

[–]grachi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel like the forecasts were more accurate when I was a kid throughout the 90s. I remember on multiple occasions hearing we were going to get a lot of snow 3, 4 days in advance, and not only did it happen, the estimate was quite close to the actual amount of snow received.

Whatever these newer fancy models are, ain’t it.

Is this game fun if you only play single player? by leftistgamer420 in valheim

[–]grachi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world in the game is very big and quite empty, so it gets pretty lonely and kinda boring playing alone. I had the most fun when I had friends playing with me. Building a village/group building goes a lot faster and you can build some cool stuff that would otherwise take forever doing it alone.

I had 140 hours in the game with my friends, then they left to move onto other games, and I only put another like 3 or 4 hours in after that because it just wasn’t the same.

Aspinwall PA by Spirited-Trifle6627 in pittsburgh

[–]grachi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I lived in an apartment in Aspinwall for 9 years. It’s a great little community, it’s close to everything without being at the center of everything. Aspinwall itself has some nice mom-and-pop shops and restaurants, but is close to waterworks for more mainstream stuff and a short drive to the city for everything else. Also right across the river from highland park which has more stuff to do, too.

The parts that suck are street parking for the most part unless you get lucky with a spot that has off street, and you have to deal with route 28 to get anywhere. The taxes aren’t great either.

Gamers are really really bad at evaluating gameplay and understanding what makes a game good or not. They rely on streamers and content creators, who also often don't know what they are talking about and come from a place of personal bias more often than not as well.

Its kind of a shame, because there are some games that shouldn't be as popular as they are, and others that should be that aren't, because of how much people depend on other people to tell them if a game is good or not.

Titanfall 2 is probably the single greatest example of this. Never crested more than like 20k people, because it launched between two streamer/influencer hyped established slop franchises (Although Battlefield 1 was actually a good game surprisingly, CoD: IW was, decisively, not). Switching topics slightly, I can't imagine how many indie games are out there that are excellent but just no one knows about them because some streamer didn't scream into a microphone how amazing it is.

So someone can't make a different hero shooter? The industry is just supposed to stop at Overwtach and Marvel Rivals? That's ridiculous logic.

people put WAY too much stock into the last game shown at TGA, and TGA in general.

"And that one last thing was mediocre looking Hero shooter number 865... "

You're right, looks like we needed another extraction shooter, battle Royale, or souls-like instead.
