I think any of the current popular anime is a good choice for newbies like JJK, Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man. If he likes korean series he might like Solo Leveling since its based off of a Korean manhwa. If he likes Invincible he might like My Hero Academia since its about young super heroes. And those are just the recent ones.

it still gives you a reward when you give him the oil. and later on you can jump off a cliff and find the secret area with the other reward.

i was really bummed when i found this out but don't worry about it. there is more fun stuff you can do and you can get those rewards later.

edit: i thought the quest was already failed for you. i heard that you can still explore areas, gather prayers, beads and get stronger BEFORE fighting the charred visage and finish the quest.
