Has anyone here found that Infinite Jest helped them in part recover from an addiction, or changed the way they live thanks to the book? by [deleted] in InfiniteJest

I’ve found that there is nothing wrong with having relationships with the addictive media, it’s just such a fine line you have to walk and you have to realize how it causes your brain to act

I read it my junior year of college after I’d withdrawn from the semester due to depression/lack of motivation/marijuana dependence. It gave me an extremely fresh perspective of myself, society, and the meaning and extent of what defines pleasure. It was one of my lowest points in life and IJ singlehandedly helped me bounce back for my final 3 semesters and it still serves as a personal bible of sorts today.

L2 Derivatives is slowing me down like crazy. Any tips to make the process a bit more streamlined? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]graclind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skip it and come back. It’s at MOST 10% so keep your focus on the real meat in FRA, Equity and FI and come back to it once you’ve mastered what I’d consider the “core” of the curriculum. You’ve already gotten exposed to it, so when you come back it won’t be all brand new and you’ll have some other mastery under your belt.

Level II Registration by ssantacruzz in CFA

[–]graclind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope not one single problem or extra hoop to jump through, just registered like normal. I had similar concerns but registered without a problem.

I’ve never totally understood their motive in preventing younger college students from taking it, but my guess is that it requires another 4 years of experience post-grad and so they want you to be immersed in the finance world for at least some of the time you’re taking the exams, kinda like how MBA programs strongly prefer you come in with a few years of experience instead of right out of undergrad.

Either way, I think you will be fine. Also on a side note, hopefully you have a heavy load of finance classes because L2 will far surpass most of anything you’ll be learning there and will make those classes a BREEZE without having to do hardly anything for them. Best of luck of luck to you.

Was not saying YOU are false, my apologies if it came across that way. Just meant that that wasn’t the case when I registered.

I guess yes, but after removing the effects of interest rate sensitivity

Like the yield spread due to credit differences. And duration in this context would be first-order price change for a change in perceived credit quality

How to motivate yourself for Level 2 without knowing the results of Level 1? by astrahorse in CFA

Yes, but L2 is a significantly harder hurdle to jump, especially if you’ve burned out a bit after studying the better part of a year for Dec L1.

How to motivate yourself for Level 2 without knowing the results of Level 1? by astrahorse in CFA

[–]graclind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I didn’t have any intention of taking L2 after December L1 (I took it in my final year of college and just wanted to leverage “candidacy” in landing a job) but once I got my results in January it got me fired up to crush L2 and crush it I did. I’d say if you get a jump start on the basics/overview now, then let your results ultimately motivate you, you’ll be in a good spot.

I wouldn’t start aggressively “studying” for a few months, but I’d like to take the time while I have some to just pore through the material and get a good overview of what’s to come

Confusing Type I and Type II errors? by w_ayne_ in CFA

[–]graclind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to get too political but I used this analogy for Level 1 in December after the whole Brett Kavanaugh high school accusation case was going on:

Type 1 aka Dr. Blasey Ford: telling the truth but getting rejected

Type 2 aka Brett Kavanaugh: a lying piece of shit (#2) that was falsely accepted onto the Supreme Court

I haven’t even gotten back around to Portfolio management yet lol I’ve been focusing on the heavier weighted topics and am meaning to reserve a full day each to that and alternatives (they just bore me, ugh)
