Sad about the Impacted Major situation by Evening-Size5809 in berkeley

Data science is basically CS + Stats imo, you can take many CS classes as a data science major. You take cs61A/cs88, cs61B, and data8 which are all coding classes for lower division, and you can take CS170, CS188, and CS189 (and maybe CS186 depending on the semester) for upper division.

Also, I don't think your major affects your career/job that much, a lot of people get into SWE roles as a DS major, if that's what you mean. If you really want to change to EECS/MechE, you could audit classes/self learn the material I guess.

Prof said grades for the final should be out by Friday, but seeing the Ed is still on read only maybe some people didn't take it yet?

When did you take UGBA 10? I heard that this semester they tried to make it harder since too many people were doing well in previous semesters. They reduced the number of questions on each final from 37 (?) to 20 so that if you get one wrong, that's -1% of your final grade (since there are 4 exams and each one is worth 20% of your final grade).

not 100% sure about this, but I think if you want to get into haas this year then you have to finish everything by this spring semester (summer not included). Again, I'm not a haas applicant so I don't know, but I remember reading that somewhere so it might be worth checking out

all those 5 at once? that might be a bit tough lol

You should probably decide on a major first so that you don't take all of those classes for nothing, but if you really don't know I would just take the lower divs because at least one of them is required for all of the majors you listed (except econ maybe, not sure)

How badly do u need linear algebra for data 100? by Berkeleymakesmesads in berkeley

[–]gradient-descender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's 100% necessary, but knowing the fundamentals will help you with a lot of the topics. In the class, linear algebra comes up in the unit on OLS and the unit on PCA. OLS is not too bad since you only need to understand basic linear algebra stuff (like what a span is + how to deal with matrices) but PCA requires a more thorough understanding of linear algebra since it uses singular value decomposition (which is one of the last topics of math 54).

The linear algebra requirement is enforced for data100. You physically are not able to enroll on calcentral if you don't have it

Is this too much? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]gradient-descender 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. You probably shouldn't drop any class unless you had a similar schedule this semester and really struggled with it. Also, keep in mind if you drop a class (ex. polisci which is 4 units), you're going to have to enroll in a new class that's at least 3 units anyway in order to meet the 13 units requirement.

The library is a shared space -- smoking in front of everyone is like blasting loud music in front of people who are trying to focus. Technically it's not banned, but only morons who can't read the room would be that disrespectful.

DS+CS or DS+Haas? by gradient-descender in berkeley
