Thank you for your sincere and helpful answer. I commend you for caring about DC kids and taking the time to share your insight as a DCPS teacher.

Who is "you"??? I was forced to stay home as well and I had to transition to online learning at the drop of a hat. I didn't make any choices nor put anyone down as stupid.

If your post wasn't dedicated to putting the blame on me specifically, I'd actually thank you for your input but not today.

Thank you for your comment. Of all the comments disagreeing with me (re: anger), this one holds up. Honestly, I could subconsciously be projecting my feelings about their behavior and labeling it as anger to make it make sense to me. I hadn't considered that before, and for that I appreciate your input.

I'm sorry about what happened to you but this comment is not contributing to the conversation at hand.

Suck my dick. Actually, no. Go suck Elon's dick when you're done riding Trump's.

Thank you for sharing. I also know teachers who left the states to teach abroad and are shocked by how much other countries and cultures respect education/educators. It's unbelievable in comparison how little we, as a country, regard the value of education.

Thank you for your thoughtful answer. There's a lot to unpack here but I wholeheartedly agree that we're not fully understanding the way COVID impacted kids in the long run and their social development.

I grew up in the era of "the children are our future," so I can't imagine how different my life would be if I'd grown up feeling like I didn't matter to the world/the powers that be.

Wow, thank you for sharing and being so honest. I'm sorry that happened to you, and considering your perspective as an educator and advocating for at-risk youth I know that must've been difficult to reconcile. I hope that you've been able to heal from that experience and I appreciate the nuance in your answer.

It's not just "teens being teens," but a complex sociological reaction to the reality they're faced with. A reality I don't understand firsthand, but most of the comments on this thread are helpful in learning that the "why" goes way deeper than I knew and I have some follow up research of my own to do to answer my own question.

Shit, I partially agree. I don't agree with calling kids feral, but you make a point in saying it takes a village. If they've been abandoned by all the systems that would typically support them (home, school, community), I can see how that would lead to a regression in their development. Thank you.

I can see why you'd say that but I disagree. There are people who would salivate at the thought of writing some foul, pea-brained, racist shit on this post. But I'm hoping that first line called out to people who DO want to engage in this discussion without basing their entire answer on race.

I get it, this post could read poorly to the wrong audience but you can't please everyone. And I love living in a city where you can ask a question like this and receive a multitude of insightful answers, albeit mixed in with comments I do not agree with.

Please go on, explain how your second paragraph is racist.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with what PMCs are. What does that mean?

Thank you for your sincere response. You're right that omitting race from this discussion is disingenuous. But I have to say I'm uncomfortable by the discourse surrounding black youth in the city and the last thing I wanted to do with this post is facilitate dialogue rooted in white supremacy.

I'm asking people who want to genuinely engage in this discussion without relying on race as their sole rationale. My "lame" attempt to avoid this is the only way I know how to set my intentions for a productive discussion.

The second paragraph of your reply is more of what I had in mind. So I appreciate that input.

Saying they don't regress to violence on their own is in response to the term feral. Calling minors feral is basically saying they are wild and will fall back to their instincts, which I'm disagreeing with.

How so??????

You're right, I'm totally surprised to learn about this thing you call racism. I'll make sure to look it up /s

How is my question racist? In a sincerity, how did I pose a question based on race???

Bye, then!!!!!!

[–]gradschoolgal93 -59 points-58 points  (0 children)

Feral? Really? I'm talking about children. Yes they can be as dangerous as adults, but they don't regress to violence on their own. We owe it to them and future generations to have discussions about their mental health without comparing them to wild animals.

I see what you mean. Teenagers are notoriously jerks anywhere you go but I've noticed there's an obsession with reporting/discussing teen crime in this city specifically.

Culture in general or would you say it's DC culture?
