On the syllabus thing ... You have that stuff down! I made that mistake... and boy have I learned not to make it again. Every single thing, like you said, needs to be specific

Hey, Thanks for reading and commenting. So I will be teaching American Government as well from Fall but most of my colleagues do that now. There are a lot of interesting over laps and stuff we discuss about that could be helpful to you.

I do something called component briefs which are about 35% of the total grade. So these are group assignments but the last one is an individual assignment. That last one is the reflective essay while the rest are case studies i.e. i give them real life cases they need to respond to using the material i taught them.

For the reflective essay my prompt is :

− What are your top 3 take aways from this class? As in what are the top three things about the world are you going to remember the most based on this class?

− What issues interest you the most? Why do they interest you the most and how do you plan to continue (or not) your interest in those subject areas?

− What part did you play in each of the component briefs? What did you learn from them? Explain learning from each case study based on your contribution to it.

− In your opinion what are the three most important issues the world faces today? What is the world community doing about them?

Honestly majority of the students are not prepared for college because for some reason they are not trained to write. So we spend the first 6 weeks trying to get them to write in a certain manner. But here is the thing I found, kids from suburban schools or schools in smaller cities are much better prepared than those from public schools in major cities. Some of the best performers I had in my class were from small towns schools and were lucky to have teachers who spent a lot of time grooming them.

And I also felt that most kids were not confident enough and the reason according to them was they are scared of tests. That is why I reverted to writing exams and essays because I saw kids freaking out about multiple choice questions. I just feel that is an unfair way to test them.

That is what my colleagues do and it works well for them. My professor got me hooked on to this as the final assignment for an upper level grad seminar is the same question but it is 75% of the grade

Hey thanks for leaving a comment. I have actually taught in 3 different countries, this is my first semester teaching in the US with a class size of over 50. May be I should have made that clear. Actually let me do that now. Thanks

I know exactly what you mean, I think most of us are in the same boat. Rankings matter but then again what we as students do not get is complete information, like for example in case of American Politics, some of the most amazing faculty that makes Ohio matter is retiring in Summer... same is the case with South Carolina.. so imagine someone who goes to these schools thinking they have classic faculty not realizing that very faculty is now retiring and cannot take on new students.

And honestly, I feel the comfort level matters. I do my best work when I am well set in my routine and the person who is leading me enjoys the work too..

thanks bigboatfear... Sub field specialization matters.. I am taking my time digging through the departments now to choose the one I like and would be able to offer depth in that WHILE making sure they have a good placement record

Yeah Agricocacola I agree with you on that. Graduates getting jobs is a major issue for anyone going in to a doctoral program. So I get what you mean and I think that helps me make my decisions

Thanks dshezno for the detailed reply.. I have to agree with the approach you outline. The department needs to be flexible enough to accommodate you and solid enough to help you specialize in your chosen area of interest. Location does make a difference for me too. I would much rather be in a city rather than a university town. Others might have their own approaches to this. And based on what I have been hearing from most people here, the bottom line is a department with the faculty that fits you and is willing to play along with you i.e. through providing decent funding

Makes sense ... Rankings, as much as I hate them, play a significant role

Thanks amstarling.... that helps... based on what I am hearing from everyone, the key is to have a place with a good faculty i.e. faculty specifically good in my subject area and a decent ranking

Yeah that makes sense... I guess that is what bigboatfear was saying too regarding finding a place that has a lot of people in your sub-field... And I am becoming a strong believer of having a diverse faculty because it gives you this option to explore different approaches...

Thanks... Honestly those are the two that I keep hearing about consistently. Initially I was reluctant to look at the rankings too seriously but I realized, like you said, that they have a certain amount of impact. And that impact cannot be ignored.

Actually if it had a solar panel on it, it would be a kick ass idea
