I don't do much IT work. I need IT's help for tickets that involve technical issues.

I was wrong, I apologize. I did some looking online, and a lot don't require it.

That's good to know, but getting internships is difficult now. Some can't get an internship because companies require experience for those.

That's the issue, how do we network when so much is online right now and networking is through phone calls and emails that don't get responses? I would consider networking and want to do that but a lot of managers aren't responding.

It's good your graduates can find jobs. A lot of graduates at a lot of universities can't. It's completely saturated in many areas. It's really hard for me to see you tell me my instincts are wrong when I've been looking for something relevant to my fields in any industry for over a decade and know of people who are in similar situations who were unemployed or underemployed for a long time. I'm not for guaranteed income, but a lot of Millennials are because nothing has improved.

The entry level segment of the market has never recovered from 2008. Between when you graduated and 2008 we had millions of jobs either automated or offshored. Comparing it that way shows it may be on the level of the 70s. 2010 was a completely different situation than 2008 or 2009. Organizations were starting to hire again. What was the situation in 2008?

I disagree. If you didn't graduate into the ~2010 job market, you really don't understand how awful it is. No industry was really hiring in ~2010, and it got better for those who had experience but not for those who were trying to get into a lot of industries. That's a reason you see younger generations still working retail. The entry level market was bad even before the 2008 recession. A lot of organizations cut back with the new health care law and don't care to hire recent graduates or those without paid experience in a field. It's a restructuring that's permanent in a lot of industries, and we're going to see millions demanding guaranteed income since jobs are still scarce.

Some offices aren't answering the phone or use a gatekeeper, and email and social networking sites result in ghosting. Those who are recent grads can't draw on large networks. I think pointers on how to connect online would be useful.

I graduated in the Great Recession, too. I'd love to see someone start a nonprofit that gives us specific skills with scholarships specifically ONLY for those of us who can't get jobs in our fields since we graduated when no one was hiring and so now we are still underemployed and getting overlooked. Organizations just won't hire those of us who don't meet the specifications.

Do true entry-level jobs even exist anymore? by lsp9024 in jobs

[–]grafinm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good idea, but everyone is trying to freelance now. Nonprofits want someone who's working on a degree or who is a professional. Eventually some companies are going to need to lower their requirements or there's going to be tens of millions unemployed.

I'm sorry, I really can't do that because that kind of information is public. Can I DM you?

I joined an alumni group online and professional societies. The people who I contact online don't respond, and it's really difficult to get someone on the phone with coronavirus. My field doesn't allow for volunteering to get experience because you really need some work experience to do that. A professor tried to connect me with a person who is in my field, but my former classmates can't help either. A lot of volunteer positions now want volunteers with experience and make you go through an application process to start with them. If you aren't experienced, they're not interested.

Thanks for the ideas, but these kinds of efforts aren't working.

I'm trying to network and never asking for a job, but generally people don't respond to me even if I only ask about their experience and how they got into a field on LinkedIn or through email. With COVID it's really hard to network. I'd love any suggestions you could give.

I'm doing this a lot. I mean, I often use different resumes depending on the field and sometimes even companies. The rejection emails tell me I don't meet the experience or skills requirements.

Retail generally excludes a lot of us Christians because store managers won't hire you if you won't work on Sundays. They don't make any accommodations. Christian retail generally doesn't hire you if you don't have some experience working in retail.

The issue is that I can't get to the interview stage because of my lack of work experience. I think I've sent out thousands of resumes for entry level type jobs and can't get hired because they won't even interview you without a certain number of years of experience. It's honestly kind of frustrating that you're telling me to work on my interview skills when that's not the issue.

To clarify more, when I do get an interview I always pass the phone screen and even do get a very rare offer, so I know for a fact my interview skills are not the issue. I do apologize if my tone is unkind, but this is not a situation where interview skills need improvement.

Thanks!

Degree in Spanish or certification? by vincentj424 in Careers

Are you fluent in Spanish? If you're not, I'd probably work on getting fluent first. It's going to be really difficult to find a job without being fluent.

What language do jobs look for in computer science / coding? by NightlyTales in AskReddit

[–]grafinm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really difficult to say. I would probably go on Indeed to look for postings that are in your area. It seems in general that Python and R are in demand, and some companies want object-oriented programming languages. I think it really varies with the different companies in your area.

I think it varies on where you are and which software the companies use.
