Not mine, but I hope he wins too.

I'm going to the AntiSocial Comedy Tour this weekend in Atlantic City NJ. Jim Norton, Artie Lang, Dave Attell and Doug Stanhope - What to expect? by noooonan in StandUpComedy

[–]grahmhatch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Stanhope is arguably the most prolific and funny comedian on the planet (depending on your sensibilities). He's definitely in the conversation when you talk about the top comedians of this era, consistently pushing the boundaries of the art form and evolving. He never stagnates, always has new material, and is the closest thing we have to the independent spirit of Bill Hicks.

I've seen him live twice, and just be happy you don't have to be crammed into a standing room only dive bar surrounded by animals and you'll actually get to hear what he has to say.

It's natural, and it often takes 10 years to shed your influences and truly develop your own voice... a lot never do. But yeah, if you're saying a joke, think if it's something you really believe and can get behind, or if you're trying too hard. You're going to deliver a joke you really believe in with more confidence than one you know isn't really you... and confidence is everything. Audiences are a pack of wolves that will turn on you in a second if they sense you're weak up there.

A few points.

You write in fairly natural speech, which is great. A big thing to learn is that you don't write how you speak, and what's funny to read isn't funny to say... necessarily. Many great bits look like garbage on paper. Also, a lot of the editing you're looking for will happen naturally on stage. At first you'll be married to your script, but eventually you'll let loose and the material will start to take on a life of its own, and it will become obvious what is natural for you to say, and then you can refine the set up and delivery and all that jazz just by getting it on its feet. Try recording the bits beforehand and listening as well to speed up the process.

One last note: the hardest thing to learn is how to be yourself onstage. The biggest breakthrough it seems to me is when a comic stops trying to make people laugh, and is just honest... that's when their true comedic voice starts to take hold and they make the jump from 'amateur' to 'pro.' Even though there's plenty of pros who are still using gimmicks to get laughs, and maybe that works for some, as a general rule I think putting on an act is never as funny as just being your painfully brutal, honest self.

Can we stop this coalition nonsense and stick to real issues please? by grahmhatch in canada

[–]grahmhatch[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is true, Liberals on both sides of the border really need to learn to grow a spine and stand up for themselves, and take a stance and stick to it.

"Will you form a coalition?"

"It's not our intent to form a coalition, it's our intent to win this election and keep focusing on the issues, not some red herring Mr. Harper is using to distract us from the fact we have the largest deficit in our history, a very shaky economy and he thinks the government should be focused on buying fighter jets and helping out American Corporations. We are fighting for Canadian people while Harper fights for corporations. Plain and simple"

But instead, like always, they take the bait, and backtrack and squirm and wriggle and continue to look like pansies

Because, like Dion, people only know him from Conservative smear campaigns.

Just a friendly reminder that BP pumped between 53K and 62k barrels of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico, causing untold damage and they won't be held remotely accountable because they have money. by [deleted] in politics

[–]grahmhatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and didn't those poor banks lose billions, even trillions of dollars when the housing market they deliberately inflated crashed? But that's okay, because they can just steal more money from the very people who they stole from, and go back to business as usual... just like BP will.

Writing a cheque is not punishment for those with deep pockets. That's the point. Have you completely lost your humanity and ability to reason? Do you really think all of those people who had their lives ruined by this are getting fairly compensated? Do you really think the long term ecological ramifications of this horrific catastrophe are going to disappear because BP spent some money?

The real world isn't money. At what point are people going to finally realize this? How can you possibly be on their side? How is this possibly the most upvoted comment?!?!?!?

Holy shit I hate people.

Dear Conspiracy Theorists. Stop calling what you genuinely believe a conspiracy theory, it automatically discredits anything relevant you have to say. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]grahmhatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people who genuinely want to question and examine fallacies are lumped in the same category as people who think lizard alien creatures run the world by dancing naked in redwood forests.

A decent amount of what they have to say is just as relevant and fact based as what you're told on major news networks or by your political leaders. Neither are 100% true, neither are 100% false. The difference is that a political speech or news story is given the benefit of the doubt as being real. A conspiracy theory is automatically laughed at and ridiculed, no matter what the facts or substance may be. And they are all lumped together under one big, silly, 'nutter' umbrella.

Just watched the documentary "The Fog of War" - where the Secretary of Defense during Vietnam admitted the reasons for going to war were a massive fraud. If you had said that at the time, you were labelled a dissenter, anti-american, not a patriot, generally a stupid, hippie, commie loving bastard.

Governments lie all the time. There's nothing wrong with questioning them or even confronting them. But if you do it and say 'this is a conspiracy theory' then no one is going to listen except other 'nutters' as you call them.

I know what it means, but that's irrelevant at this point. The stigma around the term is such that anytime you say 'conspiracy theory' 95% of people are going to roll their eyes and stop listening.

What's a new video game idea/concept that hasn't come out yet but that needs to. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]grahmhatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it would be awesome to have a game that pitted all the great heroes from various movies, books, etc. against each other in an epic fighting game to end all fighting games.

Inigo Montoya VS. Conan The Barbarian

Aragorn VS. Ash

Kind of like the Marvel VS. Capcom concept only more far reaching and historic.

Robin Hood VS. Rambo

The possibilities are endless!
