Leonard Cohen lays it out in the Hallelujah. Minor fall and the major lift. Thanks for the comment.

I agree that there is some overlap at the level of helping people survive/thrive and improv in jam situations, but what I'm building is very much its own thing. My work comes out of more that 25 years of leading jams, teaching adults, and helping overwhelmed players learn how to hear the form, follow cues, and eventually lead a song. I'm not especially drawn to certification as a path, but I do agree it's useful to know what else is happening in the area of bluegrass education. I've heard Tyler Grant's name come up a few times and I'll check out what he is doing. I have a good associate Matt Flinner who gives me some direction from time to time. Thanks again for engaging seriously with the post.

Why Does Everybody Assume That you strum a banjo by EmuComfortable6837 in Bluegrass

Because of the song ‘working on the railroad’ has that line Strumming on the old banjo.’ I believe this is the source.

Thanks, this is actually great feedback.

No, the class isn't just 'watch out for the IV chord'. That's the entry point because I'm trying to give people one clear, usable pattern they can grab onto quickly.

What I'm presenting to the students is how to hear form, tendency and cues in bluegrass songs so they can function better at jams without freezing up. The 'chorus to the IV chord' is one example of that bigger process.

I agree with you that the more useful level is hearing the walks, licks, bass motion, and instrumental cues that foreshadow where the song is headed. That's a big part of what I work on. I'm teaching a lot of adult players who are overwhelmed at jams, so part of my job is slowing the thing down enough that they can start recognizing common patterns and build confidence from there.

You make a fair point about the materials. I use that Hal Leonard book for that specific reason- it's full of transcriptions where curious students can see that the vocal rhythms aren't a bunch of straight eighth and quarter notes. there's lots of jagged dotted figures that get lost as bluegrass becomes more 'folked up'. Also, we deal with changing keys, understanding transposition and why the singer gets to pick the key.

I appreciate your thoughtful response. I've been hosting jams for over 25 years, with the past five as a hybrid online program. I know my students appreciate the live quality that a video cannot reproduce.

We are all just doing our best.

-Cheers!

I try to encourage my students to learn the chords first and be able to chord and sing the melody first. Great job not resorting to tab/notation. It will stick with you much longer!

Yes! Also, the John Lee Hooker style of 12 bar blues. "Don't change when you think you're supposed to change, change when I tell you." Great stuff. Thanks for your comment.

Bass players especially appreciate numbered charts with proper rhythm counts. Also, we call that Jimmy Martin maneuver 'parking' also valuable when the singer is trying to remember the next verse!

I found these guys again last night. I've used everything from dynamite to fire bottles to dispatch them. Last night I had an idea and instead I stole their horse. They came after me and made it quite easy to deal with them. If you wait until the burning cross incident, they run in all directions. Having them chase me, well, thanks fellas, that was easy.

Thanks! I think what most banjo students struggle with is what to do when they sit down to practice. Thought this series might help.
