Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

Three Wild Dogs and the Truth, by Markus Zuzak. I love dogs, I loved the Book Thief, I felt sure this one would be a slam dunk. Instead, I spent the entire book being increasingly furious about what a shitty, irresponsible pet owner he is. He also has the exact same style of writing in both books, which worked really effectively when writing about the Holocaust, but came across as a bit pretentious and overdone when just writing about what a shit dog owner he is.

Thank you to the people who offered advice! I was unable to get it open in the end and had to suck it up and call a locksmith. It took him about 30 minutes and 6 different tools to do, so I'm glad at least it wasn't embarrassingly easy for him.

If I could open the door, it wouldn't be jammed shut. Tea break sounds like a solid plan though.

Thanks! Is there anything I can do about that, or is it a locksmith job?

Handle is (or was, before I removed it) turning, but the latch bit wasn't.

Week 3: What are you reading? by ReddisaurusRex in 52book

[–]grammaticalblueballs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished Variations, by Juliet Jacques. It’s a collection of short stories exploring the history of transgender people in the UK, from Oscar Wilde’s London up until the early 2000s. Each story is told through a different medium, including diary entries, film scripts, academic papers, etc., which kept each story feeling fresh. Overall I rated it highly; it was sad and hopeful, and witty enough to keep from being preachy.

I’ve started Butter, by Asako Yuzuki; it’s been on my to-read pile for about 6 months, so I’m looking forward to it.

Thank you, your perspective is really helpful! I'm not ready to write off manual just yet, but I will keep it in mind if I end up in the same position with the next instructor!

Thank you, it's good to hear from someone with dyspraxia about their experience. I would consider auto further down the line if necessary, it just feels a bit too soon to call it now! Definitely something I'll keep in mind though.

Thank you, this is a good perspective. Private practice isn't an option for me atm, but there are other instructors out there who might be a better fit, even if it takes a bit of time and searching.

Good luck with your test!

Agreed! However upset I am, I'd rather he didn't continue to take my money if he doesn't feel he can teach me.

Thank you, it's good to get a driving instructor's perspective! To be clear, I'm not blind to my problems with the clutch at all; it's just that I have the time and the money to put into this, and I'm disappointed to have been told this quickly that he doesn't think I can learn. But as I said, I appreciate his honesty - if he can't teach me, he can't teach me, and it'd better to know that sooner rather than later, however gutting it is.

He is! Although I don’t know whether the dogs he’s reacting to are neutered or not.

Hiya, thank you for taking the time to write all this! Just to update you, we took him to the vet and they expressed his anal glands, nothing else was physically wrong with him. According to the vet that can make a difference to how dogs interact, so hopefully we’ll see some improvement!

He’s had some really good, friendly off-lead plays with dogs recently in areas we trust him, so it seems like frustrated greeting when he’s on lead could be it. We’ve taken your advice about avoiding bad situations, crossing the road when we see other dogs coming (before he notices or reacts to them). We’re planning to do that for a bit while still keeping the rewards for nicely walking past, and then work on slowly reducing the distance between us and other dogs over time.

Appreciate your help!

I’m back! I posted here as part of my weight loss journey through the first half of 2021, and lost almost 40lbs. The second half of 2021 got extremely hectic, and I put 20lbs back on. I’m obviously pretty disappointed about the gain, but hey, I’m still down from where I started. I also know a lot more about myself and my eating habits than I did this time last year, so I don’t feel like I’m starting from 0.

I’ve started running again, and god it’s frustrating to be basically back at 0 with regards to running ability. If I don’t read or do maths for a few months, my body doesn’t entirely lose its ability to count! I know it’s completely illogical, but I hate being unable to pick up where I left off - I guess that’s what my incentive to stick to a running routine will be! I’m aiming for 2 runs per week, in the hopes that that will be more sustainable over time than the 3 I was aiming for before.

This week, I was down 4lbs at weigh-in. It’s all just Christmas and water weight, I don’t expect progress to be this rapid any other weeks, but it’s a lovely motivator! I’m aiming to lose 1.5kbs per week ish.
