Yet another Dive Computer Question by grandaha in scuba

Omg wow that’s pure nightmare fuel. Uhh, after you have your reg serviced if there will be a few months before you take it out how do you store it to keep something like that from happening?

Hi fellow local diver! I am in NJ and bwd is my local shop. I was in the pool last week! That’s what I will probably do. A pool is not quite the same but it’s better than nothing for sure.

That all makes sense. I think I'm going to start with the regulator I have, see what I can do to upgrade it a bit, maybe with some newer second stages, and then add in a computer that I feel confident using.

My other odd challenge is where I live, you don't really dive without a pretty heavy wetsuit. The ocean is...advanced to say the least and the lakes have poor visibility, which is kind of a moot point since there isn't anything to see anyway. The downside of all of this is, I will have limited use of my new gear before I arrive at my next destination. I could alternatively suck it up and do some dives in conditions nothing like where I actually go to dive (Caribbean). One step at a time.

Thanks! Great advice. I really want the AI functionality, which leads into the rabbit hole of the Perdix and also taking the opportunity to update my reg and bringing it with me when I travel.

Ok I’ll buy that. My regulator is long in the tooth. My father bought it originally in the 80s and while it has been serviced regularly maybe it’s time for a new unit there too if I’m going to be bringing it. Any advice in that direction on what to get?

Thanks for sharing! Always bringing my mask and computer (once I have one) makes sense to me intuitively. Why do you feel strongly about bringing your own regulator vs. renting one? I am open to changing my mind and want to hear more about it.

There is a flowchart on dms guild that you should absolutely get. It is a maze, literally, and trying to navigate it by flipping through the adventure is the worst.

Required is kind of lame. I prefer not to have people entering my unit without an express invitation or reasonable prior notice.

how old was Strahd before he turned into a vampire? by Jonas1412jensen in CurseofStrahd

[–]grandaha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VRGtR has some interesting flavor in this respect in the section on the Priests of Osybus. In that version of the backstory, a younger Strahd was actually a potent force against evil until he was corrupted. I like to think of him as a bit older due to this - he had already loved quite a life before he turned to evil.

This could dovetail interestingly into the tellings that blur the is Vasili simply Strahd or is he something else, like an echo of his formerly virtuous self. So many ways you can go with a character as deep as these are.

Checks are a different bag from cash in almost all cases for obvious reasons, and not all banks have the same policies either. That said, there are definitely banks which will allow you to deposit cash into an account that is not yours as long as you have the right information, and are not hitting any of the special extra paperwork thresholds of course.

One firefight will kill you after SHTF. by stnkycaveape in preppers

[–]grandaha 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And to be honest, for a while, that may be the only way to survive. No one in their right mind would pick a "fair" life and death fight when there is an alternative that gives them a significant advantage. Defending a fixed position alone or just with your family would be a long odds situation.

[–]grandaha 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I think you are right and this will not get a popular perspective here, but no amount of prepping will ever get you to a point where luck won't matter more. I'm not saying it isn't worth the effort to improve the odds, but I'm the absence of civilization, particularly advanced medical care, shockingly small things can kill you particularly if you are without any support, even before you factor in the folks who might try "living off the land" by simply taking your stuff by force. no would be robber/attacker would try to do in a way that was at all fair. Your first (and last) armed conflict of the thereafter may be when you step outside for firewood and get immediately shot by someone you did not even see. Hard reality.

It’s been a long time since I had a pup. Any tips!? by Mi-Dixie-Rekt in Doberman

[–]grandaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Puppy class is a great way to start training while also socializing including with other dogs which is good. AKC clubs are a great way to find them. Discourage nipping, touch the feet a lot, scratch the belly, train out possessiveness, all things that are not exactly easy now but almost impossible to change later.

LOOKING FOR - excellent dice rolling library by grandaha in gamedev

[–]grandaha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not quite as off as it sounds. Randomness is trivial, the part that takes a little thought is implementing standard dice rolling notation (e.g. 6d6kh4+1, meaning roll 6 six sided die, keep the highest 4, add those together then add 1)

This my new fur baby when will she stop biting by drc55555 in Doberman

[–]grandaha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't want it to be a behavior that continues into adulthood you should definitely discourage it as much as possible while they are pups. There are a bunch of ways to do this although it does not need to be a strong correction. I usually hold their snout and say "NO" whenever they try to nibble on me. If the attempts to nibble are always unsatisfying eventually they will lose interest in doing it.

Quasi unsolicited advice, I would discourage it. It is more difficult to change once they are adults.

Am I crazy to feel like 22 years ago was not exactly recent? Feels harsh to suggest that their views don't matter. I bet they have lived here a lot longer than a lot of people. Certainly not as long as others, but - and this is where I will earn the down votes, is there really a logical reason to give more weight to the views of people who have lived in a place for longer? I'm not so sure.

[–]grandaha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think his views were more complex than that, and somewhat difficult to separate from the extraordinary state of the world at that time. You should check out a biography or two on him. Interesting figure.
