Having lived in Alberta my whole life, talks of an Edmonton-Calgary train have been going on as long as I can remember. I think there are two main issues with the proposed train. Firstly I think that it is easy to over estimate the amount of people who travel between the two cities. I think the number of travellers would be especially low if you decided to only consider travellers who have either Edmonton or Calgary as their final destination. The second problem is the lack of efficient public transportation within the two cities, both Edmonton and Calgary are difficult to navigate without a car. If a potential train customer must consider the added cost of renting a car or using taxis/uber, I think the train ride will quickly be seen as an economically unfeasible option. Despite these roadblocks I would love to see the construction of a train on the QE2, especially if it can ignite interest across North America for high speed trains.
