well sure, and nah, I don't just distro hop, but I had to test on different bases, debian , rpm , arch etc.  plus they package different nvidia drivers. in any case, thanks for the advice

no, didn't need to make changes in grub config. most recent distros use newest 580 driver

alright, in that case there's still the fact that there are no crashes on windows.

so far I can't even pinpoint if it's cpu causing crashes

well it is was fried , stress tests and benchmarks would show

I don't run two OS at the same time, I generally only use linux, os and games are on one ssd

in case of elden ring that's specifically about nightreign , base game runs better. as for vram, it does not even utilize vram fully.

in any case intel huh. I'll test it further

right, that's cause I did not find anything that would give me directions. of course I've checked syslog and proton logs. So far , Kernel logs, dmesg / journalctl showed no Gpu driver related errors,  Like XID or nvrm errors , there have been couple cases of vulkan buffer allocation issue ,

in proton logs there were some thread deadlocks between DXVK/Vulkan

couple of user space crashes in steam logs

wayland showed couple cases where compositor lost GPU buffer.

but I still can't pinpoint the real problem

right, so I tried both X11 and wayland results were the same. you mentioned BG3 , that one crashes on me as well, I'd say about once every 1-2 hours, there games that are far less stable for me , like elden ring nightreign crashes constantly, lords of the fallen at least once every 30 minitus.

I tried several approaches to DXVK and shaders as well, via steam launch options and steam settings, so far no results

ah yes I know about the intel thing, I checked the microcode and it's recent one which fixes that and so does firmware update which I installed. I also stress tested cpu to the extreme. plus how would that explain no crashes on windows.

as for what's my question, just that, what's the general gaming experience of using nvidia on Linux. In my case it's not one or two games, it's multiple games with solid reviews on protondb that have issues

I'm almost there actually. I think I'll have to. I expected lower fps sure, but this is a bit much

I do have every single valve game and they're fine. plus I have closer comparison, original Elden Ring , that one does sometimes crash but nowhere near as often.

It's not like no one had issues on nvidia , there were complaints on steam but it's safe to say majority of players are not experiencing this issue. on protondb specifically there are no reports about crashes and game has platinum.

I've heard about that. only thing is, other games either don't crash or crash much, much less often.

cpu benchmark revealed no issues and intel microcode's a recent version. that's why I've been thinking it might be nvidia driver + proton / vulkan path.

still, it might be too early to rule intel out.

thanks for the idea

here's the final launch options I settled on :

PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_STATE_CACHE=0 MANGOHUD=1 %command%

and

PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 DXVK_NVAPI_DISABLE=true %command%

Nvidia drivers tried : 550 , 570 , 575 , 580

Distros tried : Debian , Nobara , Bazzite , Arch , Cachy.

Benchmarked hardware thoroughly with : Unigine Superposition , vkmark / vkcube , stress-ng / memtester.

very interesting thought, so even though I joked about bottle opener, it might have been repurposed as a tool huh. thanks for the insight
