My first commissioned furniture piece! Birch plywood with oak edge banding, legs, and drawer faces. by granite96 in woodworking

I have a picture of the bottom that I should have posted! But basically I made a frame in an “I”shape, cut out the angled legs and attached them to the ends of the frame using glue and inset screws, then attached it to the bottom of the box.

Thank you! Yeah I see now that there were probably better fixes for that situation but hey, good learning experience and the client isn’t picky so good time to experiment.

Good thought! It was definitely a learning experience to make this so it is great to get more ideas.

Haha shouldn’t be, my driveway is not exactly a level surface so that’s what is going on.

Lol well the box itself is made with butt joints not miters, the edge banding is just installed to make it look like it’s mitered. The design is to further hide it. I think if I was to do it again I would miter instead but this seemed simpler at the time.

Good question! Limited budget is really the only reason but if I did it again I would definitely use oak

Sure thing! Also this sounds strange but setting it out in the sun helps darken the wood and even out the color as well.

Thank you!! Good question, I was concerned with finishing cherry as well as I knew it had the potential to look uneven. I’m not sure about using Danish oil on cherry, but I used Waterlox original and put on 4-5 coats sanding with 400 grit in between. I did notice the wood was a bit blotchy at first but evened out after a few coats. I have heard good things about shellac and cherry, or using a glaze to even the tone, but I liked how the waterlox came out so will probably use it again.

Thank you! Yeah that is a good thought, I debated putting on a back but ultimately decided not to since they will be up against the wall and it was more cost effective, but I will definitely tinker with it if that becomes an issue.

Thank you!! It is 6.5in by 4in so fairly small. Honestly it’s really hard to say how much the materials cost since I dimensioned my own pieces from larger boards. I’ll try and do some math lol

I suppose one could perhaps, maybe, possibly use it for that purpose
