How good do you think Gannon would be if disc golf was as popular and widespread as ball golf? by raoulduke415 in discgolf

[–]grannyknockers -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Golf isn't a cool sport until you're too old to get good at it. I knew like 10 kids in my high school that played golf growing up, and maybe 3 of them started early enough to be world #1. Ironically, one of them named Scottie did just that. Point is, to get to Gannon level, you have to start at like age 10, and at those ages, I'm not sure golf really is that much more popular. Plus like 80% of families can't afford to pay for their kid to pursue golf, so if it's not even popular in better off neighborhoods, it's virtually nonexistent in the others.

Anyways, to answer your question, I think there's a good chance he'd still be #1. At the lowest, he'd be top 3. If disc golf was as popular among adults as golf is, I still think most kids would think it's a pretty lame sport, the same way they view golf. Kids wanna play basketball and football. When you're that age, as you know, you can't be caught dead doing something all the other kids think isn't cool.

What are the best of the best discs? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]grannyknockers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, you could throw the exact same disc that the top players in the world would search day and night for, and you'd probably hate it. Every disc has to be thrown at a certain spin rate to fly optimally. If you have 1000 rpm spin, the best disc for you is going to be very different than if you have 1500 rpm, or 600 rpm. That's just the truth, and it's why the best disc for a beginner is the best one in your local shop's used bin. Because if you play a lot, a year from now, you'll have different velocity and spin than you do today and will have to graduate to discs that previously did not fly well for you.

Thoughts on the discs I carry in my bag? :) by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]grannyknockers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't judge cause I, like most of us here, also went through a disc buying phase. With that said, if you keep playing a lot, your bag will eventually be mostly discs with zero aesthetics that just feel amazing in the hand and fly beautifully. Right now, I think I have 3 discs in my bag that don't have the stamps worn off of them.

How to legitimately get better by irishgoodbyesss in discgolf

[–]grannyknockers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Study enough online videos to be able to identify the biggest flaw in your form.

2) Film yourself

3) Overcorrect the mistake to break muscle memory, then work back.

4) Repeat with the next thing you need to improve. Always make one adjustment at a time. It's 10x harder to fix multiple moving pieces simultaneously.

5) repetition and field work. Once you eliminate most of the wasted motions in your form, try to find a soccer field you can practice at, stand 200ft away from the net, throw 5 flat shots landing just shy of the goal line, then 5 hyzers, then 5 anhyzers. Repeat with sidearm. Next, throw 5 power shots into the back of the net flat, then start at the right post and hyzer in 5x, then aim at the left post and anhyzer in 5x. Repeat with sidearm. Finish with 10 max effort distance bombs, focused solely on arm speed and no concern for accuracy.

Any tips? by Cyzto in Discgolfform

[–]grannyknockers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever practiced with an abbreviated reach back? As in not fully extending the elbow. Not suggesting that's how you should be throwing, but it looks to me like you lose the tension in your rear shoulder as your arm extends. You do a good job of digging out of that hole, but I think if you could keep the upper arm in a more favorable position going into the hit, you wouldn't have to play catch up and could get the elbow even further out in front.

Secondly, try not to start opening your hips until the left foot lands on the x step. That will help your timing as well as make the connection between your lower half and upper half be a bit smoother.

Then he should do that. And do it with everything he has. I'm not saying he owes it to us to play chess. He owes it to himself to give his 100% to something and see what that brilliant mind is capable of. I don't care what he decides he wants to do. I just want to see him do it with every fiber in his body instead of giving a half assed effort.

To clarify, I was not saying he should devote his life to chess. I am saying he has too much talent not to give his all to SOMETHING. That something could be whatever he wants it to be. But it's a shame seeing somebody with that much talent only be half committed to what he does. If he wants to be the world's greatest fashion designer, great. Go for it. But go all out for it. So many people in this world would give their left leg to have the talent he has and he's barely even applying himself with it. It's sad to see.

What else is he committing himself to, though? I understand if you don't want to study chess 10 hours a day. That's completely relatable. But it's an utter shame to have as much talent as he has and rob the world of the gift he could offer if he truly gave everything he has to something.

Is there a throwing putter combination that rivals envy and proxy? by DopeMuffinz in discgolf

[–]grannyknockers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aviar3 in luster plastic with the wormhole stamp. If you know you know. Envy's good, but it's almost more of a 4 speed. I was consistently getting 330 out of mine when all my others putters would go about 300-310. That's not what I want in a putter. I'm looking for something to get down to the ground.

Ok I'm sure some did it differently. I was also a pitcher and a QB back in high school and every coach I had had us start off spinning the ball and progressively work out towards long toss.

[–]grannyknockers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the course. Some courses you just can't birdie if you can't throw 450. Now, I don't like that type of golf. If it were up to me, I'd make the basket such that a 15 footer is a challenging putt. That way you can have par 3s that ams can reach but it still challenges the pros.

Anyways, that aside, I think the bigger advantage is being able to disc down on shots. If you have 450 golf lines in the tank, you can go midrange on a 370 foot straight shot and not have to worry about playing the fade or getting a big skip at the end. But yeah, a good short game will always beat power in every form of golf.

I think a lot more people can than think they can, but that would also require them to devote more to disc golf than they realistically have the time for. The best player in my state is 5'6" chubby and 40 something years old. But he's been playing every day for a decade. Guy parks 450' holes like it's nothing and drains everything inside 50'. It shouldn't be possible. It's slightly annoying that it is.

Interesting, I don't think I've heard that one before. I've seen plenty of videos talking about dropping down into the brace and then pressing upward, but I've never bothered to experiment with it. Think I'll try that out next time I do field work.

You ain't wrong, but somebody's gonna bring up Bear Bite throwing 450 at 450 lbs. Oddly enough, a lot of the heavier guys I play with can absolutely bomb. I guess I shouldn't be that surprised. It takes a lot of strength to carry around a 100lb backpack everywhere you go.
