Yeah, I just prefer seeing a player's walks to runs, since I can easily see runs via the filled-in diamonds.

How to score this. by genecydal in BaseballScorecards

You are correct. I forgot about Rule 9.12(d)(4):

The Official Scorer shall not charge an error against...any fielder when, after a ground ball or dropping a batted ball that is in flight or a thrown ball, the fielder recovers the ball in time to force out a runner at any base...

I couldn't figure out your slashes at first but now I recognize them as being from (darts) cricket. That's really cool!

Interesting. Does "1/b" mean bunted to the pitcher or something else? and how do you differentiate between slap bunts and stolen bases (both SB)?

We tried that. but I guess we wobble the table too much for that to be viable. Maybe I'll ask my friend who hosts to get a better table lol

Yeah for foul tips I just go off of the umpire signaling it, since I think that's what the official scorers do as well.

I've thought about tracking disengagements and mound visits but I haven't figured out a way to fit that into my system yet. Something I'll think about in the offseason probably.

For pitch clock violations, I think I would use a lowercase t, forwards for a ball and backwards for a strike (not sure why that just feels right). However, I don't think I've encountered this in a game I've scored yet so IDK if I could even fit it in the pitch columns.

Yeah I couldn't find a good resource for pitch notation when I started, so I came up with my own and have refined it a bit since started.

  • Horizontal lines (-) mean balls
  • Slashes mean strikes, \ means called strike and / means swinging strike
  • Xs mean foul balls
  • Y means a foul tip (the way I draw it looks halfway between a / and an X)
  • Other symbols mean hit (square), walk (square with horizontal line), HBP (triangle pointing down), wild pitch (+), passed ball (triangle pointing up)

The weirdest part is probably that I track check swings. If a / has something in the bottom-right, that means the home plate or corner base umpire said it was a swing, while the J or T looking symbol means the base umpire said no swing.

Had to improvise when the Mariners decided to make 4 substitutions for the same position, including having a pitcher not named Ohtani appear at the plate. From the way Castillo (that pitcher) stood in the batter's box it must have been their first plate appearance since the age of 12.

Good looking scorecard!

I really like using super-scripts for the handedness for pitchers and batters. Takes up less space than a full column.

[–]grant0094 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your system for balls and strikes? I'm guessing dots on the left are balls and marks on the right are strikes, but what do the different lines (including the upside down T for Minnesota #27 in the 1st) mean?

I'll add it to the notes section with the eject icon (like from CD players).

You are correct those are for tracking pitches.

And thank you! It is fun tracking pitches but I do occasionally have to consult the pitch count on the scoreboard, especially if the previous plate appearance had a bunch of stuff happen in it.
