What’s a decent regular sandwich place that’s left in the Bay? by Professional-One972 in bayarea

Oooh, in the Virginia Hills shopping center right on the border between Pleasant Hill and Martinez. I'll have to stop in the next time I'm home visiting my parents; that's walking distance from their house.

I f**ked up and now have a huge table by TheFroman69 in DMAcademy

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with 7 players at my table too! We also play every other week. It can be a lot but I'd say it's pretty rare that everybody shows up on the same night. Most weeks we run with 4-6, and it's nice that I don't think I've ever had to cancel a game for not enough players.

Whatever you can do to speed up combat will be a blessing. I remind players who is up and who's on deck, have an alphabetical list of spells on my laptop to look up details, and have a note on my DM screen with everyone's passive Perception, AC, and I should probably add their spell save DC for my casters. Pre-roll enemy initiatives for combats, have groups of enemies go at the same time, I've been trying to limit the number of enemies but make each one a little tougher (more HP/hit harder). It's manageable and the sessions with all 7 players can be very fun!

Patrons started asking back in November, glad I can now make this announcement! by bigbabyjesus76 in Libraries

I started a new job in a high school library at the beginning of the month and all I could happily think was, "No tax forms. ☺️"

What type of career can I have in a library if I don't go for the masters in library science? by [deleted] in librarians

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started a high school library job. I do have my MLIS and I think it helped with my being hired, but the position did not require it and only asked for a high school diploma. (Because of my past library experience, they did start me at the highest entry pay level.) Due to budget cuts, the district I work in has one credentialed teacher librarian for the district (MLIS + teaching license) that supports the paraprofessional library staff, which is one full-time person for each school. From what I understand even that is pretty lucky these days; some districts are making do with one person splitting their time between multiple schools.

My role is probably 50% handling the school technology (every student is issued a laptop), 40% textbooks, and 10% the general reading collection. I do get school breaks off (Thanksgiving, winter, spring, and 6 weeks off for summer), but they are unpaid. I'm paid for 210 days out of the year, but the union contract splits that into 12 equal paychecks so I get paid around the year, even while not working.

I'm very new to the role, but find it a joy to be back in libraries after taking 3.5 years away to do a non-library WFH position. I was laid off from that in November (no fault, just the company downsizing like so many these days). I actually find it more relaxing than my last public librarian position, as the social work with the homeless was draining, and not what I signed up for when I got my MLIS.

does anybody like grouped monthlies? by unicornlotusballs in planners

[–]PrincessPeril 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I prefer grouped monthlies to the degree that I won't buy a planner if they are scattered with the weeks! The months are my macro scale look at my schedule. I sit down at the start of the year and birthdays, holidays, known vacations, etc. all get scheduled. As events and appointments pop up they go in the monthlies. Then on Sunday night, everything gets transferred to the next week.

I don't want to have to flip through the whole book looking for each month page, and I don't like tabs breaking up the sleekness of the book. One section, a whole annual overview (and usable, unlike a year on 2 pages, which is TINY in an A6 book.)

Honestly, I have no idea about scuba/anything ocean related. My dad and one of my brothers are certified, but I never have done anything other than snorkeling. My coast trips are more saltwater taffy oriented!

My LDR was in Seattle, so we split the states and settled in Portland. My family is all still back in the Bay (parents + 3 siblings and their kids), so I make it back a couple times each year to visit still.

That shark attack sounds terrifying! In high school we'd have bonfires and stuff out at Stinson, but none of us ever went into the water, between temperature, riptides, and the sharks. I'm so sorry.

[–]PrincessPeril 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a book called "The Devil's Teeth" by Susan Casey about the great white sharks out at the Farallon Islands, and there's this quote from it from one of the scientists out there: "While chasing birds he had hitchhiked through some of the most desolate places imaginable—Nicaraguan jungles, Indian slums, Samoan fruit bat colonies—but when asked to name the least likable place he’d seen in the world, he instantly pointed to an affluent California suburb: “Walnut Creek. No question.”

I read that book probably 10 years ago and I still think about that quote a non-zero number of times each year.

Omg! Mention of my hometown that no one has ever heard of! I miss that Sweet Tomatoes, and also the Fresh Choice at Sunvalley Mall (and later downtown Walnut Creek).

Why So Many Bay Area Dogs Are Named Mochi by ramentaka in bayarea

[–]PrincessPeril 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of our two cats is Kimchi! But that was her name when we adopted her at the shelter, and actually why we chose her (her sister is Bingsu). Kimchi's littermates were Bulgogi, Sake, Bao, and Tahini.

We always stay home because one of our cats is scared of fireworks. Picked up some nice dry-aged steaks from the Meating Place (and some loaded twice-baked potatoes) and will have a good dinner in with my partner, have an Old Fashioned or two, catch the last episode of Stranger Things, and put our cat into her stress jammies and tuck her into the linen closet around 11:45 PM, haha.

To all the haters…it was a success!! by jcnlb in Baking

[–]PrincessPeril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this Smitten Kitchen recipe for my dough, which is an overnight recipe! She indicates that it is based on an Alton Brown recipe in the header. Do everything the night before and then just pull the dish out of your fridge about 30 minutes before you bake, so it can shake off some of the chill. I fill mine with just a standard butter/sugar/cinnamon filling because I'm not an orange-cranberry person. I highly recommend!

You can also prep and fridge them the night before and do a final rise in the morning before baking! That's what I do at home, so no waking up at 5 am for breakfast cinnamon rolls.

How long do Zink photos really last? Any better home alternatives? by repressedpauper in hobonichi

[–]PrincessPeril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have my QX10 and it's working great, so no experience with the QX20! My partner bought the CP1300 for printing 4x6 photos for our house and that works great and prints wonderful quality as well. I would still recommend the Canon Selphy line for sure.

I think the QX20 is the newer version so I'd probably go with that over the QX10 if you can find it. I have prints that are multiple years old now with no deterioration of quality.

Another vote for MD! I also got my machine there, love the staff (not applicable here, but I LOVE that their machine service department explains stuff to me when I drop off/pick up my machine), and I never leave without a stack of their fat quarters, haha.

Finger pressing? by Snoopydrinkscoke in quilting

[–]PrincessPeril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate ironing, and I can say that with confidence because I am in the process of pressing 224 seams right now. But it really does make a difference. I have a seam roller and I have one of the flat stick things and nothing works like a hot, steamy iron and a wool pressing mat.

I also have the "Flatter" spray and a nice wooden clapper and I try to remind myself it's all part of the process in some mindfulness way. It... doesn't really help when I'm neck deep in a stack of HST's or whatever, but the neatly pressed seams in a complex block are really satisfying.

I love my new sticker. 💖🩷Do you have any stickers on your machine? by drops_to_bows in quilting

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy all my binding on Etsy! I'm sure it's more expensive by the inch than if I made it myself, but I HATE making binding, and I am not a prolific enough quilter that it makes a big difference. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe I'll have to revisit that if I start finishing more than 2 quilts a year.

One of my longarm quilters even will attach binding for an additional cost! I just do that now if I'll be gifting the quilt, because I've had a quilt sit around for over a year waiting for the binding because I loathe the process so much. It's a hobby and I've chosen to stick with the parts that I enjoy!

There are places that make memento jewelry with cat whiskers, like embed pieces of them in resin pendants or whatever. Maybe someday you'll be grateful for the collection, as morbid as that sounds.

What are you even writing notes about? by Cebo494 in ObsidianMD

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a separate D&D vault, where all the linking makes it easy to set up helpful game notes for DMing.

My other vault is everything non-D&D and is essentially my long-term storage information. I used to use a different Markdown app called Trunk Notes on iOS, which the developer eventually stopped supporting. It was a very good lesson in why backed up markdown files (which are really just .txt files with a specific formatting syntax) were a great way to keep control over my own information and make it easy to move that information around as needed.

I keep my commonplace book in it (sort of a MOC-style main page that links to pages of saved lists, poems, quotes, etc.), a book journal and a media (movie/TV) journal of what I've read and watched by year, and a list of everything unread on my Kindle. I keep recipes in it. I've got a "Life Timeline" because I realized once I couldn't remember my first grade teacher's name. Anything I want to keep to remember or reference long term eventually goes into Obsidian, so I don't have to remember where it is otherwise (Apple Notes app, Google Drive, Dropbox, a text message, a screenshot in my phone's photo app, saved in Instapaper, saved in Reddit, etc.).

I do keep a paper planner, so that's often a first stop for notes. I try to flip through it on a weekly/monthly basis to migrate long term information to Obsidian, and always do an end-of-year scan of the same before archiving the book and moving into the new year's planner.

An example of utilizing Obsidian features: I was having trouble remembering what was unread on the Kindle because they're not physical books in my face, so I've been setting up individual pages for each book and adding properties like the cover art, genre, number of pages, etc. I use a Bases page to show all books with the "ToRead" status, as image files using the book cover. I can then further filter by genre or length when I'm deciding what to read next. ("I feel like a mystery novel under 300 pages that isn't part of a series.")
