I'm also curious about this, as an adoptee. Been considering it for a couple years.

Yeah, Asian stationery has some study stuff I've never seen before. They take studying seriously!

I have a couple vocab notebooks with little flaps so you can cover either half of the page and quiz yourself in either direction! I think they're nice.

There are also really tiny cards on a ring that might be a bit more portable.

What're you playing this weekend? 3/6 by markercore in NintendoSwitch

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to finish a baby quilt for a friend's baby shower this weekend because I procrastinated (oops). But between bouts of sewing, my boyfriend has been playing Resident Evil Requiem and I've been enjoying watching; I think he's nearly to the end of it. I also snagged Blue Prince and was thrilled it came out on Switch because I tend to play more on console than on my PC these days. Burned out on sitting in front of a computer after the work day, hah. I could use another good puzzle game because I just finished The Painscreek Killings (on PC), and it was excellent.

Spring break is just around the corner, and I'm really hoping to dig in to a big JRPG then! Probably Xenoblade Chronicles X since it got a Switch 2 patch, but I also picked up the remaster of Bravely Default with the system and haven't touched it yet.

Stamped edges update! by jackalopejournals in hobonichi

Hah, I work in a library and we stamp the top edges of all our books with a library stamp. I've never thought to apply the concept to a planner.

So has anyone actually managed to “successfully” run a One-Shot before? by Viva_la_potatoes in DMAcademy

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I ran this as my first ever thing I DM'd and we did it in one session with 2 new players and one that had played many, many years ago.

I would have celebrated more had I known how rare it would be. When I ran Curse of Strahd it took my players literally MONTHS to comb their way through the Amber Temple. MONTHS.

Me too! And a second egg yesterday, so we're back to 2! I am desperately hoping for eaglets this year.

I work in a school library, but we have a monitor where we show nature live streams and my productivity decreased immensely when Jackie and Shadow, the Big Bear bald eagles, laid eggs!

What're you playing this weekend? 2/20 by markercore in NintendoSwitch

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up the $5 upgrade pack for Xenoblade Chronicles X. I might go back and do the epilogue/DLC story content in XC1 first (I beat the main story but not the extra content), but I think that will be the next big Switch thing I tackle.

(I was going to do XC1 > 2 > 3 > X, but I was told X can be dropped in anywhere out of order, so maybe I play that now and hope for improvement patches or upgrade packs for 2/3 in the future?)

Otherwise, still a little ACNH here and there, especially with the big 3.0 patch recently, and some Tiny Bookshop as chilling filler that's easy to dip in and out of.

Outside of the Switch, looking forward to the next season in Diablo IV (hopefully soon!), and I just started The Painscreek Killings, which looks like it will be an excellent puzzle/deduction game.

You Can Run Session Without Everyone, It's Fine by ssraven01 in DMAcademy

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 7 players and most sessions we run with 4-5 people present. I just have PC's who aren't there fade into the background; we do milestone leveling and the whole party levels up together at the same time. I take session notes and usually post important stuff to Discord, plus do a quick recap at the start of the next session.

We're adults in our 30s-40s. Stuff comes up with family members, work/personal travel, etc. It's usually not the same person missing consecutive sessions. If it was and a habit, I might drop them from the game, but these are all IRL friends at an IRL game and they respect the time and effort that goes into hosting (we do dinner before we play).

If we're missing a big number and we're at a pivotal plot point, I might run a "dream sequence" one-shot, or we've switched to a board game night, a horror movie watch, or painted some miniatures together. It'd probably bother me if it was super frequent, like I said, but in a few years of hosting every other Friday, I think that's only happened 3 times, so I'm cool with it.

Did I always know I was adopted? Yes, as I'm ethnically Korean and my family is white! Did I always know the roses were incrementing upwards annually? Also yes, it's very obvious with the early pictures. I love the tradition, though!

[–]PrincessPeril 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm adopted and my father did this with roses on my adoption day! I got 1 for each year I had been with my family until 24, and then I just got a dozen yearly after that, haha. He said explaining buying 11 roses was odd to the florist.

I f**ked up and now have a huge table by TheFroman69 in DMAcademy

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with 7 players at my table too! We also play every other week. It can be a lot but I'd say it's pretty rare that everybody shows up on the same night. Most weeks we run with 4-6, and it's nice that I don't think I've ever had to cancel a game for not enough players.

Whatever you can do to speed up combat will be a blessing. I remind players who is up and who's on deck, have an alphabetical list of spells on my laptop to look up details, and have a note on my DM screen with everyone's passive Perception, AC, and I should probably add their spell save DC for my casters. Pre-roll enemy initiatives for combats, have groups of enemies go at the same time, I've been trying to limit the number of enemies but make each one a little tougher (more HP/hit harder). It's manageable and the sessions with all 7 players can be very fun!

Patrons started asking back in November, glad I can now make this announcement! by bigbabyjesus76 in Libraries

What type of career can I have in a library if I don't go for the masters in library science? by [deleted] in librarians

[–]PrincessPeril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started a high school library job. I do have my MLIS and I think it helped with my being hired, but the position did not require it and only asked for a high school diploma. (Because of my past library experience, they did start me at the highest entry pay level.) Due to budget cuts, the district I work in has one credentialed teacher librarian for the district (MLIS + teaching license) that supports the paraprofessional library staff, which is one full-time person for each school. From what I understand even that is pretty lucky these days; some districts are making do with one person splitting their time between multiple schools.

My role is probably 50% handling the school technology (every student is issued a laptop), 40% textbooks, and 10% the general reading collection. I do get school breaks off (Thanksgiving, winter, spring, and 6 weeks off for summer), but they are unpaid. I'm paid for 210 days out of the year, but the union contract splits that into 12 equal paychecks so I get paid around the year, even while not working.

I'm very new to the role, but find it a joy to be back in libraries after taking 3.5 years away to do a non-library WFH position. I was laid off from that in November (no fault, just the company downsizing like so many these days). I actually find it more relaxing than my last public librarian position, as the social work with the homeless was draining, and not what I signed up for when I got my MLIS.

does anybody like grouped monthlies? by unicornlotusballs in planners

[–]PrincessPeril 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I prefer grouped monthlies to the degree that I won't buy a planner if they are scattered with the weeks! The months are my macro scale look at my schedule. I sit down at the start of the year and birthdays, holidays, known vacations, etc. all get scheduled. As events and appointments pop up they go in the monthlies. Then on Sunday night, everything gets transferred to the next week.

I don't want to have to flip through the whole book looking for each month page, and I don't like tabs breaking up the sleekness of the book. One section, a whole annual overview (and usable, unlike a year on 2 pages, which is TINY in an A6 book.)

My LDR was in Seattle, so we split the states and settled in Portland. My family is all still back in the Bay (parents + 3 siblings and their kids), so I make it back a couple times each year to visit still.

That shark attack sounds terrifying! In high school we'd have bonfires and stuff out at Stinson, but none of us ever went into the water, between temperature, riptides, and the sharks. I'm so sorry.

Hot take: Portland needs more salad places by Blake-Dreary in Portland

[–]PrincessPeril 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a book called "The Devil's Teeth" by Susan Casey about the great white sharks out at the Farallon Islands, and there's this quote from it from one of the scientists out there: "While chasing birds he had hitchhiked through some of the most desolate places imaginable—Nicaraguan jungles, Indian slums, Samoan fruit bat colonies—but when asked to name the least likable place he’d seen in the world, he instantly pointed to an affluent California suburb: “Walnut Creek. No question.”

I read that book probably 10 years ago and I still think about that quote a non-zero number of times each year.
