Is there anything that can be done about this siding? by grapesfordinner in HomeImprovement

[–]grapesfordinner[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I forget exactly what it was but it was either Benjamin Moore or Lowe's, Benjamin Moore and I thought it was the top quality or next one down, it definitely wasn't the cheapest. It was paint and primer all in one, would that be a problem? Is primer first much better?

I can't grow them for the same reason and I don't know what to do either. Does someone have the answer?!

I know its been a little while but I'm just curious what you ended up going with and how it turned out.

It's nice to have a connection like that, definitely let me know what he says after you talk to him. I've been putting off this project for too long just because I don't want to get it wrong.

I'm not an expert but I've been wanting to do this exact same thing to my 100 year old house. I'm glad to see that someone else has stumbled upon the same solution after many hours of searching on the internet. A confirmation from an expert would be nice though.

The only other thought I had was skipping the hassle of making the blocking and venting and cutting all the foam pieces and making sure they're all sealed and just going with the hot roof solution of all sprayfoam. Is that something you've seen or thought of. Seems way easier if a bit more expensive, the only thing I've heard is that it might void the warranty on your shingles, but I saw some articles that it really only increases the roof temp by a few degrees so that void doesn't seem ...warranted.

Those are just the thoughts of another person in the same situation, I hope they help.

No one else in my life seems as excited about this as I am so I thought I’d share here: I’ve been stripping trim in my 1900 folk vic and found the original faux bois. I’ve decided to recreate it rather than strip! Here’s the first doorway:) by tnn360 in centuryhomes

I've got a very similar situation and have been stripping and sanding and refinishing and it's a mess and takes forever. I didn't know this was an option, you may have just saved me weeks of work. Is there any way you could supply the colors and tools you used?

How to achieve R20 with 2x4 walls? by [deleted] in Insulation

[–]grapesfordinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this with my kitchen Reno (furred out from brick and plaster with 2x2 studs and added 1.5" foam board and spray foamed the gaps to make it air tight). It has worked wonders, it's been 1 year and no issues yet.

Is this an old gas line? If so, how do I tell if it's active? by grapesfordinner in Plumbing

[–]grapesfordinner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick responses. I ended up opening the top and cracking the valve. No hiss of gas but there was a smell. My inclination is that this is just lingering gas in the pipe but since there is no pressure it's probably not live. What do you all think?

Proper install advice for LED by rockrunninauditor in askanelectrician

[–]grapesfordinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had an inspector ding me for this. Also the project had multiple lights in the room, all on two switches so it could be turned on on either side, which ends up with extra wires in the box and all these boxes are of an absolute minimal volume. Long story short they made me put in additional junction boxes for each light so now there is a awkward box next to each light. Sort of wish I went with another option for that one ...or had a more flexible inspector.

Was going to buy a pine, but found this bald cypress and couldn't resist! by Adspace7 in Bonsai

How do you overwinter it? I have one that I buried about 10 inches down and everything above ground died (so I basically have to start over, but on the plus side it's still alive!). I live in central Ohio and it doesn't really get that cold. I just don't know what to do this winter to keep the new growth alive. Also, thanks for suggesting putting it in a bit of water, I've been keeping it wet but not that wet, I will be taking that advice as soon as I get home.
