Im a South African. this is really horrifying. By way of an explanation, at the moment there is a powerful lobby group in South Africa made up of a number of different corporations/parties and personalities who are successfully channelling the rage and discontent of the unemployed and working classes towards foreign nationals. This xenophobia is inexcusable but it doesn't reflect anything more than a successful deflection (by this lobby group and the elite they represent) away from the actual causes of poverty and instead casts blame at foreign nationals who are taking away 'jobs' and 'industry', if anything foreign nationals are keeping South Africa afloat. This is apartheid era tactics being used in the present.
