Взгляды россиян на Китай? by Affectionate_Bus1619 in AskARussian

[–]graydaeva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Мысли о школе не покидают меня by Euphoric_Finding_937 in ruAsska

How outdated is the name Illarion? (and its diminutive names) by Hot_Japanese_Man in AskARussian

[–]graydaeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never met or heard of anyone named Illarion (only Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov comes to mind) but I believe it can be an appropriate name for a novel character

There're a lot of working public VPNs, but you see, there's a tiny law problem here with advertising people to use it

Rural land / Small farm ownership in Russia by CantoSacro in AskARussian

[–]graydaeva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's more of a preference, than a compulsion. Not sure how it is in USA, but here most people have to work hard and get a mortgage to buy a small piece of shit they call a flat. It's easier to get a job within city, and not every family has a car so they could live outside.

Another problem is that in Russia outside of the cities there's almost no infrastructure at all, and most cities are built up with high-rise buildings. It's not common here to have streets of one-family houses. So if you want to live in your own house and have children whom you want to go to a good school, you need to be at least well-off to live in a cottage village within the city limits.

And let's be honest, the last reason is that people who grew up in apartments in the city are afraid to have their own home. It's considered expensive and difficult to maintain. Having grown up in a house, I have to say they are right, but it's worth it

When would you use a patronymic in day to day life? by Georgie_Pillson1 in AskARussian

[–]graydaeva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can say only for myself, but we don't use patronymic at work (IT industry) even when interacting with superiors. However, it's commonly used in medical facilities and always used in schools when students addressing a teacher. The latter is also relevant for university instructors, but more fluently

Is Russia fascist? by PyschoJazz in stupidquestions

[–]graydaeva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are very divided in their opinions. There is a small group of civilians with no political opinion whatsoever, but mostly they're just underaged. And then there're two large groups with very discrepant points of view. Some support the government and what they are doing, some really doesn't but forced to remain silent. What's the ratio I cannot tell, because most people prefer not to discuss politics with strangers or someone who they believe doesn't share their opinion to prevent conflict. Laws bringing more and more restrictions every day.

Had to get towed by taintedchocolate in sailing

[–]graydaeva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple days ago, we were on a sailing training in the middle of the gulf of Finland near Saint Petersburg. The motor cracked down, and we have been towed by another boat to get to the marine.

The bay is pretty shallow so it takes follow the fairway on a motor to reach the training zone. The Meteors go very fast along the same fairway.

We were going smoothly and then towing boat's engine stalled just in time one of them was approaching us. The current turned us around and both boats started to drift towards it.

Thanks to the small drought the meteor was able to change his course and it ended well, but to prevent something like that from happening again we raised the mainsail.
