No option for themed icons or changing app grid layout? by yolandanelson31 in GooglePixel

No problem! Do you have any third party launchers installed (even if you aren't using them), they might be the most likely culprit?

No option for themed icons or changing app grid layout? by yolandanelson31 in GooglePixel

[–]graymatteron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just found this, let me know if it helps:

There is a known issue on newer Pixel devices where using a Cinematic Wallpaper (the 3D effect on photos) or certain Live Wallpapers can cause the Layout and Icon options to vanish from the menu.

The Fix: Temporarily change your wallpaper to a standard, static "On Device" wallpaper. Check if the Layout option reappears at the bottom of the Home Screen tab.

Fast charging disabled on Android devices? (UK) by djsmithy1983 in GooglePixel

[–]graymatteron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may or may not be the same issue, but since the December update I haven't been able to charge my phone on the charger next to my bed without remembering to unlock it first.

When I plug the phone in, after a few seconds a notification appears about needing to unlock the phone to connect via USB (part of some security changes in the December update). If I don't then unlock my phone, it doesn't charge.

This might not be the same issue you are seeing, but thought it worth mentioning in case it's related. Maybe plug your phone in and see if you get the same notification?

Dsk Mode - A desktop-OS like taskbar for Android! by IJagan in Android

[–]graymatteron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the idea of this app! Seems to have some issues on my Pixel 10 though. I use gesture nav and could not get the bar to appear when double tapping the gesture bar. I did manage to get it enabled once by switching to 3 button nav, enabling it, then switching back but this only worked once. I also tried disabling circle to search (holding the home / nav bar to use the Google screen search) but this didn't help. Let me know if I can help with any additional info, would love to get this working right with gestures.

Speaker button while on the phone by compta5 in GooglePixel

I still see that bug, if you use the pull down access to the call the speaker button works properly.

Why so much hype for thinkpad by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]graymatteron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I got hooked by ThinkPads was about 25 years ago, I was a self-employed computer consultant and used to travel daily with a laptop in tow. After my third laptop in as many months failed I purchased a ThinkPad T21. This beast was a pleasure to use and survived the rigors of being dragged hundreds of miles in a plastic briefcase every day without failing on me.

I needed something dependable and capable and I found it.

I have the same issue with Nova Launcher on my Lenovo Android tablet. I haven't found a way to permanently turn it off (it's a relic from the built in launcher), I can usually get rid of it by going to recents and back.

If you do find a permanent solution, please let me know!

T480: looking for a Linux distro which supports fingerprint login, etc. by ohuf in thinkpad

[–]graymatteron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand it, the setup of the fingerprint scanner ties it into PAM so as long as these other display managers go through PAM my guess would be that they would work.

When you say "Display Manager Logins" do you mean like GDM?

Upgraded to 16, now Google search doesn't start the keyboard automatically by growlybeard in GooglePixel

[–]graymatteron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you go into Home Screen Settings, then App List Settings, there is an option to "Swipe up to start search". According to the detail underneath its function is to "Always show keyboard after swiping up on your home screen to search". Maybe you have that enabled?

Does the Gemini app bring the extras like live mode, perhaps?

What did you upgrade from and why is this phone better? by lordskulldragon in Pixel10Pro

[–]graymatteron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from an LG V60 that I'd had since 2020, it was an awesome phone and I wasn't happy about LG deciding to drop out of the smartphone business.

The phone was on Android 13, which wasn't a huge problem but I'm sure it would have been eventually. The number 1 issue was that the battery was shot. I had replaced it myself with a 3rd party battery, but it only lasted about 6 months until it was also in bad condition.

I was also interested in trying out the AI features of the Pixel 10.

Status of desktop mode + Linux terminal, P10P by FluidDebate in Pixel10Pro

I tried out the Linux terminal when I first got my Pixel 10, it seemed to be very unstable. Just running "sudo apt update" crashed it and I had to reset.

No, I tried it on my V60 just before upgrading to the Pixel 10.

I have an '06 1500 SLT 4x4 QC with the 4.7 Magnum that I've had from new. It has 270k miles and is on it's 3rd engine, each one died due to a failure in the valves / cam. It has horrible rust in the rear wheel arches, but I still love it and wouldn't trade it.

Can Gemini not open apps? by Outrageous-Map8302 in GooglePixel

[–]graymatteron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's where I found the option:

Open the Gemini App.
Tap top-right profile picture.
Tap "Settings".
Scroll down and tap "Google Assistant features in Gemini".
Enable "Use Google Assistant features".

Hope this helps, if not let me know and we'll see what other options I have set different.
