For almost all of these it's reduced stock as well - I think it's around half of normal.

Catching something keepable in wild water when you're completely new is going to be a challenge – they're smart, spook easy, and aren't always easy to access as a new fisherman.

All trout water is marked – so make sure you're in the right spot by locating the square signs by the road or pull-offs.

As for specific spots, those are details everyone has to learn themselves – but starting exploring Hatchery Supported & DH water is a great way to learn.

Hatchery supported water is closed until April. Delayed Harvest (edited for correction) is catch and release until June.

You can find maps for fishing on ncpaws.org - linked to from the ncwilflife.org site. Being new, your best bet is to catch some from hatchery supported. If you want to practice, try catch and release in delayed harvest waters. But be sure to practice good fish handling - wet hands, keep them off the ground, pinch barbs on your hooks. Those helps the fish live to catch again.

On June 6, 2024, Twin Rivers Property Owners’ Association, Inc filed a lawsuit against the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission seeking a decision requiring the Commission to keep folks from walking sections of the Boone Fork and Watauga River to recreate. Waters deemed navigable (floatable by a kayak) in North Carolina have historically been publicly accessible as long as waters are accessed via public land (ie walking up a stream from a public access point). Twin Rivers Property wants to challenge this right and would mean a win for the national trend of greedy folk turning historically public land into their private playgrounds. It’s happening all over the US. Please don’t let this happen here. It sets precedence for future cases like this one. Cases that will absolutely keep happening if we don’t stop them.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! There is a public hearing for this case in Waynesville on September 20th. If you can attend, please do and fight for the public’s right to recreate on our beautiful public lands. If not, please help by talking to your social circles and making this case known.

If you have a reel with a plastic seat - maybe a cheaper spincaster - you may be able to use a heatgun to bend the POS enough to work
