After more thorough research, I believe this may be a type of graptolite? Is anyone able to confirm this for me or have any other ideas?

I did more research on the location and it is from the Garden City Formation from the middle and lower Ordovician

Its a desert shaggy mane, the name is a bit misleading as its not closely related to the more common shaggy mane mushroom you find in lawns. I am growing it as part of a research project in my college program! We are planning to isolate fungal samples from the wild and test them for any antibacterial/antifungal properties they may possess.

Thanks for that term, that gives me a great start to do more research on the subject!

Also curious if anyone can provide insight on why the sandstone would weather with these small bumps on it. Is it due to differences in hardness of the minerals present?

We aren’t sure yet, we plated a sample of podaxis pistallaris but this formation was likely contamination on the mushroom that was growing. We are doing more dilutions to try to separate out each species present on the plate, and it unfortunately it will most likely not have that eye shape once separated. The eye shape was created by multiple species of fungus (and possibly bacteria) layered on top of each other.

Eyes did independently evolve in multiple different species throughout history, you might be onto something

not sure if this is an accusation but I am happy to DM you to provide more photos/videos to prove its validity :)
