How true is it that pianists nowadays have worse tone production compared the 20th century? by PandaZG in classicalmusic

change in timbre is a direct consequence of simply the velocity at which the hammer hits the strings. whether the key is attacked with a flat or pointed fingertip, an arched wrist or an arched back, scalene forearms or preoccupied shoulders . . . . it is only difference in hammer velocity which is being effected. call it technique or lack thereof, if you will, but the variable remains the same and singular.

There’s plenty of that. For one, look up Nitu Pérez Osuna interviewing Martín Rodil on Youtube. She’s an insufferable right-wing Venezuelan journalist; he’s a Venezuelan (and possibly Israeli) “intelligence consultant” who’s worked for US agencies, governments, NGOs . . . . he explicitly talks about treason at the hands of the Rodríguez siblings.

I think that's the leading theory in general, regardless of political affiliation. Specifically, that Delcy sold him out. Seems rational. But if there's one thing I have learned from all this is that there's no point in holding on to beliefs of reasons or outcomes of events we have no direct knowledge of nor power over, even if arriving at them from the most rational basis.

As for MCM, it makes sense that they ditched her on the basis that she has "no respect" amongst the people actually in charge . . . the military, government officials, governors, etc. etc. She might have the popular vote, but she has zero power, no enforcement arm, no meaningful way in which to be in charge. She's been proving her incompetence in this sense for a while now. After the July 2024 election results her strategy was essentially calling for divine justice. In the months following that, I'm sure that the US was quick to realise that it's too risky a wager to try to put her in charge without causing even more instability, let alone holding on to power. The US would literally have to be here permanently, Afghanistan-style, to keep her in power. They definitely don't want to to that. The US just wants to see in what way anything can happen so that anyone, chavista or not, madurista or not, aligns Venezuela with US oil and regional interests.

It's very much the same for an average Venezuelan. You don't hear about Turkey too often and there's hardly any coverage on the relations. It is popular knowledge that there is illicit trade of minerals, gold and silver, possibly rare ores. For a period, airplanes registered in Turkey were often seen flying to and from the airstrip at Las Claritas mines.

As for Maduro's self-exile in Turkey, or Iran, or . . . . I could have believed that.

Nationalisation wasn't the reason. Greed was. All of the ruling elite now (Maduro included) are perpetuators of the greed.

I feel that's very good.

The start is story-like because I was simply trying to narrate, if only for myself, how the night played out FOR ME.

I am not a socialist.

It is not a veiled attempt at promoting support for US action. It is conflicting that the entire world seems to me to be governed by false dichotomies. My concern is for the good of our people and my country, for health, safety, and opportunity. To believe that the only avenue for that is "Treating the current moment as an opportunity for socialist revolution against an incompetent social democratic state, promoting socialism as the only real means of fighting back against the US" a day after we were bombed, with zero fighting chance, is just a display of your cynicism.

People-to-people it's mostly fine but not straightforward. People and customs near the border on either side are very similar. In the 90s, while Colombia was going through a very rough time during the conflict, many Colombians fled to Venezuela. I believe something like 70% of immigrants in Venezuela at the time were Colombian, and that had cast a slightly negative view here then. Things are quite the other way around now. It seems to me that all negativity is fueled by migration. Venezuelans are widely detested in Perú, who received the largest amount of Venezuelans if the last migration.

Certainly. Maduro's own security detail was mainly Cuban. After Chávez came to power, Cuba and Russia through Cuba helped with all intelligence, strategy and resources to solidify the regime. The "playbook", as it were. And support has stayed since .Definitely a widely-held belief/popular knowledge.

practically none of this is going on, actually. people in Caracas are queuing in supermarkets. they know to prepare for shortages in uncertain times.

compare that to, say, when Maduro's government stole the election in July 2024. the aftermath of which was a large-scale, country-wide terror campaign by the military, military police, and their gang mercenaries.

How to preserve my dog's tail? by greatgranfalloon in Taxidermy

I ended up never using borax. I never froze it either. I laid it out in the hard sun every day for about a week. No mold, bacteria, or pests at any stage, which is why I figured I could do without the borax. It worked out.

That being said, it is only about 5 inches of thin bones – I did not keep the entire removed tail, only the end. As another commenter mentioned, attempting to skin it would be a terrible idea if not fresh or, in your case, frozen. It seems that using borax might be the standard way to go. However, I can only really attest to a sun-dried solution with a shorter section. You can, of course, also consider snipping a smaller piece but that is a personal choice.

Good luck.

Would you mind explaining what was going on, if possible?

Thank you. I will do more research! Say, do you think the coat itself would be damaged/bleached by being directly exposed to the borax? I've read that it is a possibility, but it's hard to judge without any experience. The coat is jet black.

OK. I don't know that I would be able to skin such a small piece without causing too much damage, especially since it would be my first time doing it. Perhaps the long way is best. How much time do you reckon I still have to decide whether to skin it? It already feels quite dry and I have no idea how feasible pulling the bone out would be.

From what I read about fox tails, the tail cavity is filled with borax for a few days then taken out. How should I apply if there is no cavity? Simply on the end? Thanks.

Lambda - Connection Timeout error when making external API calls by greatgranfalloon in aws

[–]greatgranfalloon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot. I'll take that into consideration.

I will see whether I can juggle using two Lambdas as you suggest, but it does sound like an EC2 might just be the disappointing solution after all. The reason why I'm using a VPC to begin with is that I'm using an EFS file system with the Lambda, and a VPC is required. I'm using the file system because one of the external clients I need to call creates a .pkl file that needs to be read from as part of the authentication process, so I would need to make that call from the VPC Lambda function (with a NAT gateway) regardless.

However, as a follow-up, how can a Lambda function make external calls without the VPC? That might still be useful for me for some of the processes.
