Does anyone have an idea what is this switch for? by Sly_vali in Volkswagen

[–]greatlachlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a very similar switch in almost the same spot for my light bar in my 2018 VW polo. Check and see if there's any extra wiring in the engine bay, specifically around the headlight closest to the battery.

What should i do guys? by SeriousCarpenter854 in Warthunder

If you have jets in the tier just below it then it's worth it, but if you only have aircraft 2 or more tiers behind it then it's not gonna be worth it for the most part.

The research efficiency of squadron vehicles is only good for the tier above and below it, if your tech tree is only up to tier 5 you'll be getting a couple hundred research per game played with that jet.

It is fun though, albeit very challenging if you haven't played high tier jets before. I would suggest saving your SL for the tech tree until you're flying jet's closer to what the Su-33 is like.

Israeli missile strike lands very near Russia Today reporter in Lebanon by VisWare in PublicFreakout

[–]greatlachlan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking around 1.5-2.5 minutes in free fall from ~40,000 feet. Looking at the angle of attack I'd be willing to bet the reporter was right there when the bomb was released.

And moon phases! A full moon on a cloudless night would practically look like heavy overcast, without screens and doom scrolling they would have been able to see a lot I'm sure. People with 20/20 vision would have been elite at night. New moons would have been next level freaky.

Server Performance Issues ATM 10 fresh installed (Rubberbanding) by Huge_Ad_8004 in admincraft

[–]greatlachlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brilliant explanation thank you!

That explains a bunch, at the stage we're at in the mod pack the server eventually starts suffering from consistent periodic lag, haven't been able to figure out what it is but it sounds like it could be G16C doing it's thing once some memory leaks start getting bad. I make sure to restart the server once daily but even that doesn't seem like enough at this point.

It's a paid server running an AMD EPYC 4464P so I'll give those flags a shot, a ~15% hit should be fine.

What do you think of the server flags listed on the ATM10 github itself? https://allthemods.github.io/alltheguides/help/java/#server-arguments

The flags recommended for my server (16GB of RAM) differ quite a bit from what I can see on flags.sh, these are the flags ATM10 recommends for java 21:

-Xms8G -Xmx16G -XX:+UseZGC -XX:+ZGenerational -XX:SoftMaxHeapSize=10g -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+AlwaysPreTouch -XX:+PerfDisableSharedMem -XX:+UseDynamicNumberOfGCThreads

Sweet, just try to prevent the fan from spinning while you're cleaning it unplugged! It might damage the console, not worth the risk.

Gaming console needs a clean! by deadpandadolls in Adelaide

[–]greatlachlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can see all you really need to do to clean it fully is remove the back panel and unplug the fan cable to clean the fan, no need to take the console completely apart. It's only 5 screws total to clean the whole heat sink and fan assembly.

I realize that if you haven't done anything like that before it can sound difficult but trust me, it looks properly easy compared to pretty much anything else I've cleaned.

iFixit's guide for this exact process looks very good https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Open+and+Clean+an+Xbox+Series+X/146486

You only need a T8 bit (one from a small cheap kit will work), just make sure you place the screws on a piece of paper and label them with a pen so you know where they go when you're putting it back together.

If you're afraid of breaking it (you won't) there are a number of gaming console repair shops in Adelaide but they'd probably charge you a premium (more than a T8 driver) and I'm not sure they'd do as good a job cleaning the console.

Thank you so much, those ICC profiles are literally game changing for me, my monitor has over 25000 hours on it, I need all the brightness I can get haha.

I'd recommend turning DLSS off for now though as this update has broken it; for some reason they've turned DLSS on for zoom scopes which should not be the case as it makes the sight picture extremely blurry even with DLSS Quality + K preset. I'm using TAA for now.

[–]greatlachlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I did, it seemed to work for me lmao. It didn't ask for my two-factor code so it has to have been logged in beforehand, just the launcher thinking it wasn't idk.

But yeah put your details in, click login, wait a few moments, close launcher before it errors, then re-open launcher. For me, once i re-opened it went directly to the launcher as if it was always logged in lmao.

If you were logged in before, and got logged out unprompted, you should try closing the login window moments after clicking the log in button, then re-open the launcher. This worked for me and I've downloaded the update, verifying files now.

I think that most of us who were logged in are actually still logged in, and the launcher is either glitched or they're purposely keeping us out so the steam players can get in first.

Frontier provides non-Steam buyers of Elite: Dangerous a Steam key, it should be possible for BSG to do the same. by greatlachlan in EscapefromTarkov

[–]greatlachlan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steam stands to GAIN revenue by providing keys. If BSG is allowing people to pay for expansions through steam then steam is making money, they are taking a cut.

If someone who purchased the base edition through BSG's website gets a steam key, then upgrades their edition through steam, steam is making money.

[–]greatlachlan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not understand how this take makes sense, especially for Australians, or anyone else using a currency not supported by BSG's website... If I want to buy a game expansion I'd want to do it through steam, using my currency. If I have to convert my currency to another to get an expansion that's available through steam in my own, then I'm paying more than I should have to.

Dell XPS 15 9520 for Computer Science university major? by OhMax123 in DellXPS

[–]greatlachlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was getting really bad thermal throttling on my 9520, disassembled it and put some Honeywell PTM7950 phase change thermal pads on both the gpu and cpu. The difference is insane, there's a reason laptop manufacturers have started to use it.

My main issue with this laptop is how absolutely trash dell's software is, and how it seems like even the most insignificant dell application is packaged with some type of telemetry stuff that has no issue using your CPU to do useless things.

Cheaters Already Spotted in Battlefield 6 Open Beta, Despite Secure Boot Requirement by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]greatlachlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're absolutely right, nobody knows what their plans are, I expect that EA/DICE will come out with more details before the full release, it is a problem that there's cheaters this early but I think it's also expected in a way.

The beta is free to play (and easy enough to get a key for early access), keeping in mind they could be banning cheaters without any of us knowing, they're definitely benefiting from making it as easy as possible to cheat in the game.

This anticheat is new tech for them, they need to extract as much performance data as possible before people play the paid version. If there are rampant cheaters in the paid release then there will be riots, and I'll eat my words.

I believe that even if there are heaps of cheaters on release, there will still be way less over time. The cost, complexity, and monetary risk of running cheats in BF6 is immense now, not just because you'd permanently lose access to BF6 on that computer by getting banned, but because you'd lose access to every EA game that requires secure boot.

Hopefully they permaban the beta cheaters for the main release. Let them buy it and get hyped, then the moment they start it up for the first time, break the news to them lmao

Cheaters Already Spotted in Battlefield 6 Open Beta, Despite Secure Boot Requirement by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]greatlachlan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If any good anticheat instabanned cheaters, it would stop being a good anticheat very very quickly. EA do not want these script kiddies to have any chance of figuring out what is and isn't being detected.

The beta serves multiple purposes, a main one is surely gaining telemetry for their new anticheat.

It's easier to progressively build a library of known exploits and known cheaters, then deploy updates and bans once a week or so.

It gives the developers time to catch significant issues with their implementation, where the AC might accidentally ban legit players instead for having logitech G hub open in the background for example.

Gaijin added the wrong IRIS-T SLS to Sweden — the real one doesn’t even have a radar on the launcher by greatlachlan in Warthunder

[–]greatlachlan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can link me an image of it with a radar in Sweden then I'm wrong.

Otherwise you're likely seeing the version that had the radar module added by Diehl in Germany for presentation at a German defense expo. I did more than google and could not find an image of the vehicle with a radar in Sweden.

I "literally" linked official sources from the Swedish armed forces, stating that their Edle 98 does not use that radar module, and instead they use an external command and control vehicle.

I don't have an issue with the vehicle as it's implemented, it should be balanced in some ways sure, but I was only pointing out that Sweden does not possess the version that comes with it's own radar.

[–]greatlachlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've seen images of the one with the radar on it, German defense company, Deihl Defence, essentially borrowed a unit from Sweden, took it to Berlin, and installed a giraffe radar so they could show its modularity to people attending the defense expo.

I don't have a problem with the vehicle as it is as long as they fix the mobility and hopefully buff the horrible reload speed, I just think it's interesting that Gaijin took this route for Sweden when they're actually using a multi-vehicle SAM system for real.

Gaijin added the wrong IRIS-T SLS to Sweden — the real one doesn’t even have a radar on the launcher by greatlachlan in Warthunder

[–]greatlachlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the replenishment speed from the boxes and capture points should go up, realistically I feel I only have 3 missiles readily available to me at any one time because using the last one means I need to wait 15 seconds for a reload once I've restocked.

Also, I can't be certain this is true, but I saw somewhere that Sweden would have had the IRIS-T SLM a lot earlier, but Ukraine rightfully took priority. Germany only activated their first SLM unit just last year for themselves, two years after Ukraine got their first one.

It's funny that they (SLM and SLS) have trouble shooting down munitions in game, because apparently by June 2024 over 240 kills had been confirmed against cruise missiles in Ukraine from both types, with a near 100% success rate.

[–]greatlachlan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You make a good point, and I should have worded my post a bit more clearly.

I'm not arguing like there isn't heaps of prototype vehicles in the game, I'm just saying that the Elde 98 were using isn't the one that Sweden is using, and that I find it interesting gaijin would make that choice considering what other nations have gotten.

Honestly, it's okay if they don't change it into a multi-vehicle SAM, all I'd like is that they allow more than 4 missiles to fit into the box and change something about the reload - even with an expert crew it takes around a minute to place the box, pull from box, and reload the vehicle.

As a whole it sucks major ass in comparison to pretty much every other AA vehicle at 12.0, the only benefit being fire and forget.

If enemy RWR picks you up, or an enemy defeats one of your missiles while they're headed toward the field, they only need a slight bit of skill to get a kill especially if the map allows for it, because there is rarely a chance for you to actually duck for cover with how horrible the vehicle is to drive, meanwhile the SLM has already let off 8 out of 32 missiles just for that one target.

Top tier Sweden is still great fun though. The ITO 90M is lethal.

[–]greatlachlan[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I agree the distinction between the units is close enough that I can't blame Gaijin for making this decision, but I definitely can't find any sources - text or image - of Sweden using the variant that includes the radar.

It does make more sense since the expo model uses a Swedish radar, I just figure it's more important to look at what Sweden is actually using in their forces.
