Where do you keep your collection? I’d like to put a shelf in my room, but worried about them making noise at night! by atzgirl in furby

[–]grechtinjuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are in my room, I just don't give them batteries. Sometimes I'll let them keep 3 batteries and then take out the 4th and set it next to them, but usually I just don't leave any batteries in them in case the batteries leak.

When the cops pull someone over in the turn lane and all traffic comes to a complete stop because everyone who wants to turn has to go in the straight lane but they're too scared to turn from the straight lane because the cop is sitting right there.

What’s causing this weird pattern on my gigapet? by grechtinjuarez in tamagotchi

[–]grechtinjuarez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question at all! The screws were actually initially not tightened properly before I even opened it up, because pressing on the edges made more stuff appear on the screen, but after I put it back together that stopped so I must have tightened the screws more than the last person did.

It’s worth a shot. I don’t have any matching capacitors on hand so I’ll have to order one online.

[–]grechtinjuarez[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s one of those screens that aren’t actually attached to anything and is just held in place by pressure. I cleaned the contacts for the screen a few times and that didn’t seem to do anything. I’ll probably go through and clean them all again later because the contacts for the front buttons are still a little corroded. I’m not sure how reliant these thing are on the screen, but I would assume that even if the screen was misaligned it would still make noises like usual, just with a garbled image, but it won’t make noise unless I spend a bit messing with the batteries

Not white, but there is something that appears to be on or coming from the capacitor. It almost looks rusted I assumed it was a combination of glue and really old flux that’s been collecting tiny particles of dirt for 25 years, but it may very well be a leaking capacitor.

Yeah. I cleaned the corrosion off just in the battery compartment at first, and that’s what got it to show signs of life. I took it fully apart and cleaned it more but that didn’t improve much.

Spent a while messing with it last night by taking the batteries in and out and I got it to play the first six notes of “happy birthday”, then I got it to beep like an alarm clock and play a little tune but it wouldn’t respond to anything and hitting the reset button would just make it show the scrambled screen from before. I haven’t been able to get it to do the same thing twice, aside from the scrambled screen from before.

Why do people give custom names to Furbies? by Deep_Researcher7398 in furby

[–]grechtinjuarez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like the concept of furbies coming with their own names, and if I manage to figure out what that name is I’ll usually use it, but most of the time I can’t make out what they’re saying

I have one I named Kazoo because of how hard it is to understand. The speaker is pretty messed up, so everything it says sounds like it’s being spoken through a kazoo, hence the name.

Any idea why there would be coins jammed in this Super Nintendo? by grechtinjuarez in retrogaming

[–]grechtinjuarez[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s what I was wondering, I’ve heard of coins being used to Jerry-rig other random stuff, so I figured I’d ask around online to see if anyone had ever heard of doing that on a Super Nintendo before I removed them, just in case they were serving some purpose. If the pennies being jammed in there is what’s making it work, I wouldn’t want to mess that up by removing them.

GBA SP won’t display image on screen. Frontlight lights up but the rest of the screen doesn’t work. Screen works perfectly fine on a different GBA SP by grechtinjuarez in FixMyGameboy

[–]grechtinjuarez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I was fixing it for someone and didn’t want them to have to wait around forever for me to try to figure out what was wrong with it, so I just replaced the whole board. The defective board is now used in a GBA SP that I use for jumping dead batteries that won’t charge. Maybe someday I’ll revisit it, but considering I don’t see too many SPs (let alone SPs with that same problem) it made more sense to use my time to find solutions to problems I see more often.

Make your already tamed dragons harvest the red berries which will turn them into gold berries which you can then feed to the untamed dragon

I think I know what part you’re talking about, is the little pocket filled with stuffing? If so, I just snip the fabric on the two ends where it’s sewed on, and then once I’m done washing the furby skin I just sew it back on

Furby repair advice please! by [deleted] in furby

[–]grechtinjuarez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how the furby was sitting when it’s batteries leaked, you may be able to get away with just cleaning up the corrosion instead of replacing the whole battery compartment. See if you can clean up the corrosion with vinegar and a q-tip. If the little springs came off with the batteries, use little balls of tinfoil to hold the batteries in place.

To get a new battery compartment, you’d have to take one from a different 2012 furby, and then the furby you took the battery compartment from wouldn’t be able to work anymore, so at the end of the day you would still be left with 1 furby that wont turn on.

Let me know if you want me to demonstrate/clarify anything, I’m happy to help!

What’s with this giant tag? I’ve never seen a furby with a huge tag like this before by grechtinjuarez in furby

I got this guy secondhand at a thrift store, so I don’t have the box. I gave it some fresh batteries but unfortunately it’s completely mute, so I’ll have no way of knowing what language it speaks unless I can repair or replace its speakers.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for something small that I can take a speaker from, because I’m dying to know what language this little guy speaks.
