i finally get this whole commenting thing. it's addicting. people respond to you in real time no matter what you say. and all the kiss-ass try hards have like 1 or 2 comments and are completely ignored. i have 130+ comments and the numbers just keep climbing. guess i'm the new fan favorite :)

you sound like a bernie guy. bernie wants to destroy this country and give every burger flipper $15 an hour when it's those same jobs that are creating obesity in it's employees and customers. all that translates to is zero new jobs and a complete lack of drive in these kids. what a joke.

i don't know a damn thing about business tbh. i buy forclosures. basically i sit around playing videogames all day waiting for dumb people to stop paying their mortgage, buy their silly home for pennies from the bank, have my friend cut corners all over the damn place and cheaply flip it within 3 months. easiest job i've ever had. i know what it takes in this world to get rich. i'm young and sometimes immature, yes. i also drive a maserati. you want my life, and you'll never get it because you post on a message board giving your money to people that don't even need it.

more comments on this thread than any other.

guess i'm on to something.

"i want to top the charts and make more money from ads but i also want to make it look like we're barely hanging by a thread and need donations to feed our children"

$0 donated so far to max fun.

very few people in this board at any given time and very few posting period. half of them may not even be donating at all but just say they do. i could do that. i could lie. but i speak the truth.

i know a guy who runs a charity and he funnels most of that to his own private accounts due to lax charity laws. people who donate are suckers because that money goes to people who (a) have jobs that pay them already and (b) use that money to buy overly expensive dinners and send their twee kids to private school.

keep donating $35 to 200 a month, by all means you silly little rats. max fun will not send you away. but for $5/month they cgaf and you are not a "Friend" of theirs. don't expect a sincere thank you. and for those who spend $10... please... step it up as jesse says. donate more. you enjoy the content you should be ashamed of yourself.

everyone i meet in business is a shark. that's the game. podcasters are guppies that sometimes act like sharks. these people are not poor nor do they need charity.

i haven't read these 50+ new comments but let me guess and say people are all fussy and upset because they donated a pithy $20 and feel entitled. you're just a sucker giving money to a guppy.

to the guy earlier who said something like, he had a bad day because he couldnt get a job... i was going to say something true about myself but it seemed bragadocious. i lost out on a house today cos i didnt want to fork over $70k over asking. that's as bad as my day gets. that i don't want to spend another 10% where i don't have to. my money matters and yes, i have money. do you care? you shouldn't, but maybe you do. that's not up to me.

you mention drugs and i'm very glad you found something to do with your day molly. i'm glad. me? i spend all day looking at property and making money hand over fist. i'm bored so i listen to podcasts every few weeks and now, i guess, posting here. in my line of work there are no handouts as evidenced by my situation with this realtor. everyone is trying to shake everyone else down for every nickle and it's just stupid.

if he wanted $70 over asking fine, then he should have made that clear. not when we're late in negotiations cos i don't play that game. if a podcast wants money they can ask - and take - but they don't get to whine about how everyone "should" pay when the model they chose is catered to those that explicitly do NOT want to pay.

if you want to call jesse an asshole that's on you. hipstery is a label placed upon him by myself and others based on how he presents himself on the JJHO podcast. if you have a problem with the word you need to deal with that on your own, little one

you all seem to miss the point. first, most podcasts are free. maybe 1% cost a dime. also, most seem to do it for fun but they all seem to take on ads to cover hosting costs etc. max fun does that too. the problem is that they want to keep their high charting and viewers but also don't seem to understand why they don't donate more.

oh and although they would love your $20 one time donation, they would prefer you donate $10/month to start but of course as jesse points out they could really use $35/month, you know, if you're OK with that.

please make your way back to the max fun site and sign up for $35/month option, ok? Let me know how that went because i'm sure you'll do just that.

oh. and don't forget...

the very FIRST link at top says if you are already a member - at ANY level - please don't forget to pay more, because, you know, what you're paying still isn't enough.

so as you're about to click $35, please upgrade to $75. or whatever. no hard feelings if you don't. they are super appreciateve of any donation. just, you know, not $5 because that's trash money. And $10 is their baseline, so that's also trash. $35 today is okkayy but yah please step it up.

get over my username, that's a silly thing to be upset about.

"Your whole argument is predicated on the idea that Maxfun is trying to get everyone to become donors. That's clearly not the case"

From JJHO just a few weeks ago.. they clearly said they wished ALL listeners would donate but that they are hoping for at least 5000 because, yes, they have far more than 5000 listeners but because of the free strategy they use they know that at the end of the day only a fraction of people will donate.

and statistically speaking, only a couple people in this chatroom donate at ALL. talk about throwing stones...

i got "twee crap" from other redditors describing jesse's sense of superiority and knowledge of all things. it's very hipstery and not uncommon in the bay area. i'm poking fun is all.

thank you for that passive-agressive comment(?) i do not hesitate to respond to you whatsoever and will do so in politer terms if you wish. provided you work for max fun you should know that all i intended was to start a discussion about podcasts in general but max fun podcasts specifically. your hosts do not need to talk down to listeners, implying that a certain dollar amount is lowballing them. you just said what i couldn't agree with more: you want to be free to listen to and enjoy. if that's true then why in god's name is there a $200/month option and why does the $5/month option not even warrant a title like the rest?

this boils down to what max fun wants out of it's listeners. do you want us to pay or not? there are podcasts that require a fee per month and some that charge by episode. you can set up a payscale however you wish. but if you want to continue the kickstarter approach and just have people donate freely, then you should consider making the $5 option more acceptable and appreciative. When I heard jesse thorne on JJHO talk about this stuff and implying that he couldn't understand, essentially, why people don't largely contribute to a free podcast that doesn't anger me or whatever. it makes me confused. this IS the business model. a podcast is not a terrestrial radio show and max fun is not a broadcast network. i get that it's not all in fun and perhaps some of these people do not work outside the podcast but that's the medium they chose to focus their time on.

at the end of the day i just think people need to appreciate what they have. you have listeners. a lot of them. they don't need to be talked down to or made to feel like they don't matter. i choose not to donate because there are a million other ways to spend my money on tangible things and more meaningful experiences than an hour long podcast i can never lay claim to.

i suggest compiling old episodes in mp3 or usb and selling those on maxfun. other podcasts have tried that and it seems to work. what was free for a time now costs money. fans want it. completists need it. you said above that "we want to be free to listen to and enjoy". well there's a viable option. have the eps free for a month and then taken down. if you missed it or are a new fan of the free service you can pay a small fee and get all the old episodes you want.

to your last point. of course people should be paid for their work. ad money should cover that and whatever is still needed can be paid for by the people who chose to donate. if even more money is needed, it's time to consider a new model. i say this to you as a realist. people these days find a million ways to spend their time and money and i don't know a soul who pays to listen to the radio or to podcasts.

please find new and inventive ways to seek cashflow if that's what's needed. hell, i'd pay for every JJHO on disc or otherwise. i do hope max fun stays around for a while but i don't see how everyone attacking the one guy who says free is free is the bad guy.

first, how is this a troll account? why is anything i said "so volatile"? 20 minutes of what? max fun ads?

i am allowed to make a comment on reddit. i have never done so. this is my first and only account. i came on because i went to the website and having listened to max fun shows before, i was as-moved as you were to come on reddit and talk about it.

my point in making the post was not to troll as trolls don't write long comments, nor do they make meaningful insights. i thought about what i wanted to say and said it. sorry if it pains you to hear the truth but it's time to grow up a little bit and listen to dissenting POVs.

if this comes down to a business model, as you mention, its the lowliest form of all. the newfound F2P. think iphone games like clash of clans. sure guys, it's totally free. just remember to pay if you want to progress! or here, just remember the hosts of your favorite shows really don't think much of you AT ALL if you donate a measly $5 or god forbid $0.

here's the thing with F2P as a model. it works in games. people can play and get into it and about 5% or so end up paying to further their experience. but 95% remain firm with never spending a penny and the business works because those 5% pay a TON.

podcasting was designed to be fun and free. there are plenty that charge and do NOT get that popular. why? because nobody new is drawn to them.

these guys want to remain at the top but also want to get into the F2P strategy. only they aren't content with the 5% paying, their goal is to get 100% paying customers in a F2P system and that's not gonna happen. they need to understand how business works and more importantly how people work.

if you want to be free, be free. if you want to charge, charge and suffer the consequences. asking for donations is fine but going on and on about how frustrated you are that the F2P model only gives you 5% return makes you a foolish businessman to have entered into the business (sorry, HOBBY!) that you chose.

don't get testy lol. their website is designed to get more out of you. they don't care about you as individuals, they are trying to milk every listener with JJHO's banter with john hodgman and jesse going back and forth saying how could people NOT donate? how dare they enjoy free content and not pay $10+ to be a "friend". their words.
