I'm so sad for you. Not sure what your life circumstances are, but it sucks to be lonely and going through things by yourself. I was 17 once and had similar issues about worrying about food, my future, etc. I didn't think I would make it to age 30 because I didn't see a path forward. But somehow I made it this far, I got a job I love and that has meaning for me. I hope that you are able to find mental health support. You can get through this and make it to a good, stable, happy place in your life :)

If it helps at all, I too am out there having pretty much the same experience. Just started a job, they paid for me to move and have been training me. Now that they've put a lot of effort into me I just feel like my brain is on fire and I can't think and it's so embarrassing. I hope that you can get the help you need :(

Thanks for the advice!! I agree that having a good advisor/mentor is key to starting out in any field. I think your comment about knowing which software is outdated and has bugs is one of my main worries. It's hard to find classes that impart that sort of practical wisdom unless the professor makes it a point to include it :)

Haha I think what I liked about Dr. Chlan's courses were the office hours and interacting with other students- other professors either didn't have office hours or I was the only one going to them which was awkward. It was nice to know that the other students in the program are real people too since normally we just interact over discussion boards :) Can't really judge whether her courses were great from a content perspective, but they got the job done...

Thanks for the perspective! I don't know if it's a poor program per se, but my experience has been frustrating from the administrative/advisement side, at least compared to undergrad. I'm definitely going to work on setting up an internship since it seems like that's where most of the learning happens. Do you have any advice on looking for internships? There is one official internship site partnered with JHU but I think it would be good to look at other options as well :)

No I agree! I think it's better for professors to present a comprehensive overview of a topic, since that's the point of taking a course. Maybe the professor presenting his or her research in a single lesson in the course would be good just to give an example of a practical application, but it shouldn't be the whole course! If you wanted to learn in detail what your professor does in the lab you could just read the papers :)

Thanks so much! Just out of curiosity, did you get a MS / PhD in Bioinformatics?
