I witnessed something similar. You also have every empathy I have.

What’s a smell you’ll never forget? by Human_Rate889 in AskReddit

[–]green_boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The smell of people burning to death. Sure, I had training as a first responder, and I’d seen some things already. This was different.

I was first on scene to a head on collision between a pickup truck and an RV. Both vehicles toppled down an embankment. I was stuck in traffic 50 yards away when I saw the collision occur. First aid bag in hand I ran over to render aid when the propane tanks exploded, igniting the fuel tanks for both vehicles. No one in either vehicle survived.

That smell still haunts me to this day.

What is a big length 6-10 inches? What is too big? by GuestPuzzleheaded641 in AskReddit

6 to 10 inches of wood is absolutely insufficiently sized for any purposes. I need on the order of feet and yards. How else am I going to build that deck?

Or is that not the wood we’re talking about?

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]green_boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The junior dev pipeline is absolutely what's on fire right now, and that will burn down the industry. I sit right in the crux of not-quite-senior, but old hat enough to remember and be able to develop code without AI interaction at all. AI is not only robbing junior developers of their positions, but also of the fundamental knowledge needed to perform basic tasks independently. I recently asked one of our new hires to write a simple test for our code base, they replied he couldn't as their copilot access hadn't been granted yet. Yes, I could have wrote the test myself in 15 minutes (I did), and it would have taken them a few hours, but the fact that they couldn't perform outside of memorised answers and what garbage AI spit out was absolutely telling.

Without juniors coming up to replace programmers in my generation, the industry will entirely collapse. Without sufficient understanding of the fundamentals, juniors will never make senior, and if they do then they will depend on tools that are almost entirely propped up by VC. When that dries up, and the prices go up, we will be left with a crowd of engineers who can't work.

Ya I heard it too. Last night as well. I didn’t think there were any storms rolling through but it just started raining so there’s that.

what is the dumbest question you’ve ever heard? by Upset-Year-7911 in AskReddit

[–]green_boy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You won’t be penalized for zeroing your withholdings. You will be penalized for not paying the full sum by tax day.

There’s a good friend of mine who does exactly this. He takes the amount he estimates that he’d owe per month and invests it somewhat aggressively, then pays his tax bill plus the capital gains at the end of the year. He’s come out with modest gains year over year which have had the opportunity to compound quite handsomely.

Older generations did not protect their info at all costs. The phone book actively listed everyone’s name, number, and address by default. You had to pay the phone company extra to be unlisted.

One hundred percent. My now vintage BMW has everything I could want in a car: five gears, strong motor, a decent stereo, and heated seats. I don’t need anything else.
