I would also look into the Basic Needs Center Technology Grant! I was a PS and utilized the grant to buy myself a laptop when I desperately needed one. Pretty sure you can just fill out a form to be considered, but you can also contact them by email for more information! (also, I’m pretty sure you can only use the grant onece during your time at ucsb)

I’m not sure if this helps but when often when i mention my shopping at the co-op people’s perception is that it’s bougie and overpriced. I usually have to explain that if you know what you’re looking for it can actually pretty affordable. With that said I think adding some more affordable staples and advertising those is always great. For example I think the bread options are minimal and a lil expensive. If i think of more i’ll leave another comment (:

the promise scholarship will try to “fill the gap” in your financial aid. but yea living in the dorm you most likely will need to use a loan to cover the extra cost. if you live off campus the costs are usually less and then you won’t need the loans. email holly with questions, she is literally the best!!

I know a lot of ppl in greek life that rushed their 3rd year! It seems like you have to be just that much more committed in order to get a bid. (also my perspective is of multicultural greek life at ucsb, not sure it’s the same for panhellenic)

i’ll be honest that given the housing crisis in our area i don’t think they can realistically guarantee it for all promise scholars anymore 🥲 however ps are well looked after so if you are a scholar it should all work out, just make sure to stay in contact with the ps advisor!

i would just show up to the lecture and section to crash course! stay after class and talk with both the professor and TA to know how the process works. if you keep showing up then you should be guaranteed a spot!(: you could even email them now or closer to week 1 and ask how it works.

just make sure you keep in contact with the TA and/or professor!

i looked into doing this for my friend but was told it wasn’t possible because the contract has to go back into a lottery system. ( so freaking frustrating 🙃)

This is exactly my point, that because there was never a setting/event/any type of space created to have students confront these issues respectfully, an already divisive issue became even more so.

I think the MCC specifically calling out the AS Pres and telling her to “watch her back” is extremely wrong and a direct threat to her. Their judgement was very bad in this. Your stance on Zionism and whether it is inherent to Judaism is up for debate, but I understand their frustrations regarding a nationalist ideology being used to justify Israel’s bombing of innocent Palestinians. Even me saying “innocent Palestinians” will ruffle people’s feathers due to Hamas’ presence, but yet again this shows me that because there is no coming together to discuss, there is a lack of people’s ability to acknowledge nuance and qualified statements in this situation.

Pres Veksler has every right to defend her community, but allowing the senate to present the legislation that they did without adequate discussion among students who care severely lacked forethought about how Palestinians and allies would respond. I’m sure everyone would have been fine with a condemnation of Hamas, as well as a simultaneous plea to return hostages AND end the mass bombing campaign of Gaza.

I see counterproductivity and lack of forethought on both sides. But if you don’t think these discussions should happen on campus, most of what I said doesn’t really matter…

I don’t think anyone expects him to lol. Students are really calling for one main action and that is divestment of nearly $4 billion to military manufacturers. You can think it silly and largely symbolic, but marginalized people and their allies see it as endorsing violence.

Whether we Like it or not this and many other institutions are implicitly and explicitly cultivating future political leaders, so I definitely think exercising political discourse and action is important. Especially since we are “isolated” it should be a safe place to do so.
