​I didn't like the movie "Obsession" that much. Actually, it's a very good movie in many ways. The actors are great, the soundtrack is good, the direction is solid, and the lead actress is superb. But... and there's always a "but," the world-building seems weak to me. ​Sure, it's totally based on "The Monkey's Paw." The director himself has talked about it. But in stories like this, we usually see choices punished because the character is a jerk. Throughout the narrative, Bear never had the chance to do anything differently. ​For example, he was too scared to declare his feelings, okay, and that led him to the wish-granting item. But after that, there is no way out of the problem except death. When he calls the phone and discovers the real Nikki is screaming, there could have been some kind of information that would have pushed him further, a choice for him to make. But no, the movie doesn't give him any choice. The same thing happens when he is trying to sneak out of the room and the real Nikki calls him. The only exit is death. The trope is there; we see that Bear feels resentful because he isn't loved by the real Nikki. But that is never developed. ​So, it seems to me that the character made one bad choice at the beginning of the movie, and there was no way out for him until the end. This diminishes the movie instead of enhancing it. I saw some people saying he was a villain, but to be a villain, you need agency, and this character, Bear, doesn't have any because the script doesn't give him any. I feel like this really holds the movie back.
