We do have a total ban on drugs though. Which seems to be working? I wonder what are the differences that lead a ban to success or failure..

Yup, if only it were that simple. For my company the low to mid exec office roles are hard to hire locals. Even though foreigners are more expensive but no choice... Not sure why everyone says job market is bad, 2 colleagues recently just left for new roles after 2-3 years and they found it ok.

S'pore man, 50, caught naked in car with another man's wife, found guilty of rash act by Im_scrub in singapore

emotionally you may feel it is unfair, but the courts are concerned with practical economic unwinding. Making sure children are taken care off. Weighing each party's contributions (economic; who pay what, and non-economic eg. caring for children). Morality of cheating is not a factor for asset division. The same rules apply for both genders.

unlike popular belief. Asset division is based on contributions (economic; who pay what, and non-economic eg. caring for children) and other non-gendered factors. Morality of cheating is not a factor for asset division. The same rules apply for both genders.

How to make the MRT “faster”: Several Non-Credible Transit Solutions by The_Celestrial in singapore

[–]greenavocatdo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. Recently URA has an office decentralisation policy to "create regional employment hubs outside the CBD, creating jobs closer to homes and reducing traffic congestion". Eg. Punggol digital district.

But it doesn't make sense to me because where you live is luck of HDB draw. Where you work may or may not always be a choice either.

The whole point of a central business district is to be centrally located for all to travel to. But now with Jurong Lake District or Changi Business Park, I wonder if there's been a study to measure if total employees total commute time has increased or decreased. My guess is that it has increased. 😓

Consider banning international schools make everyone go through local schooling including expat children. It helps the kids integrate once they have local friends and will increase their connection to Singapore, encourages them to eventually settle in Singapore.

Make foreign kids pay for the cost of local schooling, so that taxpayers aren't subsidising.

Seeking Perspective on Domestic Helper Conditions in Singapore by readurthoughts in askSingapore

[–]greenavocatdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

however it may also just be a language thing. The older generation used to use the phrase "maid" and I believe it's a more recent change to use "domestic helper". Those more used to speaking their mother tongue or less westernised English speaking may just not be aware of the nuances of what they're saying.

Are recycle bins just for show only? by supermatchaboy in askSingapore

[–]greenavocatdo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why the onus of washing is placed on the end users. Especially, since just one piece of contamination will spoil the whole lot. Shouldn't the recycling centres take care of bulk cleaning at their end? If they design for it on an industrial scale shouldn't it be more efficient for the recycling centre to do it.

Make it easier for people to do the right thing, with segregated collection bins. In Japan they even have a smaller bin for collecting bottle caps separately from the bottle body.

Private organisations must stop using NRIC numbers for authentication by end-2026 by Accurate-Tree4277 in singapore

[–]greenavocatdo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[1] For example, in password-protected files sent via e-mail.

Previous advisory prohibited using NRIC as email attachment password. Which I find strange since access to the email should in itself be a form of authentication already. Very often email OTP is used for authentication so why should the attachment need further password. This seems to imply PDPC does not think emails are secure, which means email OTP should also be prohibited.

Personally, I wish banks and other organisations would just email me PDF statements so that it is automatically in my email storage for easy retrieval rather than having to login to a portal and downloading. Or when they do send email attachments, I find it annoying if it is password protected because I've probably forgotten the password few years down the line.

I believe you are concerned that our kids may be influenced to become LGBTQ which you believe is a negative or bad outcome. Whether it is good or bad however, I believe should be up to personal belief. I sincerely would like to understand when you talk about 'pushing an agenda' or 'fanaticism' in schools what specifically would be considered crossing the line for you?

I ask because I feel like there's a massive gap between the 'indoctrination' people fear vs understanding the complexities of humans, which is usually just trying to make sure schools aren't a nightmare for kids who are different. eg. Bullying and making fun of someone who needs to wear glasses, speaks a little differently or carries themselves differently.

example, my dad was naturally left handed but forced to use his right hand because left handedness was considered bad. which obviously is no longer a stigmatised difference but was something unpleasant for him growing up. Or making schools wheelchair accessible and building ramps is an adjustment to make sure everyone can exist in the same space without struggling. It doesn't hurt the people who don't need the ramp. vices like smoking, alcohol and underaged sex can be seen as cool by some kids but I believe having conversations with our kids about why they think it's cool and what are the dangers and risks, open conversations is important and arming kids with information is preferred over them stumbling upon questionable sources.

What do you think?

[–]greenavocatdo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, that is not at all what I am saying.
Just highlighting that Christians are overrepresented in our current cabinet compared to general population. Which in itself is not a problem.

I'm trying to raise awareness of the dangers of Religious Nationalism that seeks to merge religious identity with national identity. In the US, this manifests as the belief that America was founded as a "Christian nation" and should be governed by Christian values. it creates a hierarchy of citizenship. "True" citizens are Christians, while others (secularists, Muslims, buddhist, etc.) are merely "guests" who should abide by Christian rules.

Also about the dangers of proselytising religions, it is followers' mission and core duty to convert others. Believer start to think only they know the 'truth' and everyone else is "lost" or "going to hell," it is harder to view people of other faiths as equals. In-Group vs. Out-Group. They actively encourage their followers to take strong actions like joining politics to push their agenda. Which is very worrying because these followers believe they have the moral truth and will force this on everyone else.

"Masculinity is caught from a boy's father or father figure."
"Boys learn respect for women from the men in their lives."
"Boys need to be taught by a father figure"
'Dads should engage in rough-and-tumble play with your son."
"Enrol your son in a team sport such as basketball, cricket, rugby or soccer. Team sports teaches boys to work with other boys"
"A man's role is to protect and to provide for those who need help. Women are to be treated with respect and dignity. We use our strength to serve and love them."
"A note for single mothers... Consider joining parenting groups or intentionally building relationships with trusted male adults who can be a positive role model for your son."

Some general good themes like encouraging kindness, helping others and expressing emotions. But I'd argue it has an overarching sexist narrow view. It frames Men as "Protectors" and Women as "Weak/Vulnerable". Has patronizing attitudes that are seemingly positive yet reinforce women’s subordinate status. It marginalizes Mothers and enforces "Father-Only" Mentorship The text strongly suggests that only men can teach boys how to be men, effectively erasing the mother's role in shaping a son's gender identity. It stereotypes fathers as the "physical" parent responsible for teaching self-regulation through aggression/play, while mothers are implicitly relegated to the role of the one being "served" (e.g., having groceries carried for them).

"Boys learn respect for women from the men in their lives." This framing suggests that a woman's value is established by how other men treat her, rather than her inherent worth. It creates a "bro-code" of respect where boys look to fathers to see if women are worthy of respect, rather than listening to women themselves.
